Hello All,

Im seeking someone to build a (5) X R2 light in a (2) X 26650 "C" format. I'm needing to replace my AW "C" cell ROP HOLA lights as my AW cells slowly die. I will purchase a cut down and borded M@G "C" body ready for the 26650 cells. Im a Cop only desire (1) level of output....on and off....nothing fancy.....Just a kick-*** duty light. I would prefer to run it regulated and seek a 60 - 90 minute runtime..... Hope this is possible....

I really need help and do not know who to contact to inquire about such a project.

I hope CPF can come through for me again.

Thanks much in advance,
PAUL

I just finished a triple P7 4D Mag build for a customer in the military.

What heatsink do you plan on using? I would use Der Witchels.

Also, I recommend using 4 26500 cells if you want a practical runtime.

Hello All,

Im seeking someone to build a triple SST-50 light in a (2) X 26650 "C" format. I LOVE the SST-50 Led. I don't think there's a driver for triple 5 Amp with 2xLi-ion. To
drive it to 2.8A wouldn't be any better than triple P7.
George has a new driver that can drive 3x5A, but need more Volt than 2 Li-ions to drive triple.

Closest options I can think off:

A. Triple SST-50 on 3C with 3xIMR 26500 DD.
B. 2C with 2x26650 but drive a Single SST-90,
need to wait for 10A CC driver to come out.

One of the China based sellers have a board that will supply
5 x 800mA to 5 emitters, but it is multi mode ..... with an annoying
strobe mode.
The consideration with 5 emitters, is finding a reflector or optic
that is small enough to sit in a Mag head. 5 x McR17XR reflectors
will sit in a Mag head.
If you had 4 x R2 emitters, you could use McR19XR reflectors
If you had 3 x R2 emitters, the above seller have 21mm reflectors
that will fit in a Mag head.

If you are looking for  output, then use a Maxflex board, the latest
versions can push the emitters at 1300mA each

A very nice build posted by member Hill uses 4 x XPG emitters.
A cheap 7135 based board is used to drive each emitter at
1400mA each. These boards can be purchased with multi modes
or a single output.

You can read about it here

Hi Paul,

It sounds like such a reasonable request, doesn't it? The availability of the C size Li Ion was an incredible enabler of moderate size power lights. I had a similar experience with the loss of the protected R CR2 size, only that was a whole product line.

Do you have a sense of what kind of beam you are hoping to have? I guess more specifically, have you seen a 5x LED beam in person or on the forum that you would like duplicated? If you can determine this, it will save one heck of a lot of time for the builder.

Don't get too hung up on it having to be the R2, as there is more than one way to approach a project.

I am assuming you are looking for a fairly good thrower with the replacement goals stated.

Hi, I ran a bit of math on your configuration just to see what is physically possible.

Input from 2 cells (from this graph from the A123 company)

http://www.a123systems.com/cms/product/pdf/1/_ANR26650M1A.pdf

2 x 3 volts x 2 AH = 12 watt hours of capacity

Power needed for 5x R2 power LEDs driven at 1 amp

5 x 3.5 volts x 1 amp = 17.5 watts

Driver and system losses - about 20%

Total = around 22 watts needed for the light.

12 watts / 22 watt hours = maybe 30 - 35 minutes.

If you go to 4 x leds instead

4 x 3.5 x 1 amp = 14 watts, plus say 2 watts of system losses = 16 watts

12 watt hours / 16 watts = 45 - 50 minutes

4X very carefully selected LEDs with low Vf and a very low loss system.

4 x 3 volts x 900 ma + loss = 12 watts

Will run for 1 hour.

Could you consider a 3 cell format?

Take care,

Harry

Thanks for all the replies. I build and mod my own ROPs and M@G85s, but dont know too much about LEDS.

Ive modded all my own swithes and installed customized Download "C" heatsinks on my lights. Along with a few tricks here and there I mod a pretty mean, efficient incan flashlight. So I guess Im seeking a multi-LED light to replace them. I want a combo of throw and spill, leaning more towards throw. Im not really looking for the brightest flashlight ever, but a very bright light with good runtime.

FYI, I plan on using IMR 26650 4000mAH batteries.

That cell selection will help.

I guess if it were me, I would be tempted to cut down an SL-20x body to a 2x or 3x imr and go from there. It would be easy to sleeve the body down to an IMR size and probably cheaper than having a C body mag bored out.

Hi EvilPaul,

I have built a light with the specs you are talking about. The one I built was in a 2 D, but it did run on 7.4V. Also the one I built was multi mode, but I have a batch of single mode drivers coming that I could probly use to build a driver that will give about 1.1-1.2A per emitter.

Here is what mine looked like.

The beam was a long throw and had a fairly large hot spot. I would say it still out through a P7 had a smoother beam for sure, and had bright spill.

This shot is running @ 800ma per die.

I am not 100% sure the drivers I have coming will fit in a C mag, but I think they will. If you dont find another solution in the mean time, we could work something out.
