I am an absolute noob when it comes to electronics/LED's, please be kind!

I'm a dental student, and decided to make a light that hooked on to my glasses to see in my patient's mouth. I have completed the light. I used a XR-E LED, with a small acrylic lens from dealextreme. I would like to integrate a dimmer but don't know how to make it.

Would someone be willing to post a schematic of a dimmer that dims from 0-500mah? The more basic the better, please no PWM! Just something with a pot and transistor is fine. The power source is 6volts (4AA). The forward voltage is 3.4v, I think.

I know these LED's can handle up to 1000mah but my heat sinc is small, and wouldn't be able to dissipate the heat.

If this is more work for you than I am imagining, please let me know. Thanks!
