Re: What LA \'s can I run in the Surefire TurboHeads?

There are five major SureFire TurboHeads:

"T" 3" diameter Lexan
"12PM" 2.5" diameter Lexan
"SRTH" 2.5" diameter Lexan [without threaded bezel rim]
"KT" 2.5" diameter Pyrex
"Millennium TurboHead" 2.5" diameter Pyrex (Shock Isolated, only in HA)

Lamp Assemblies:

N1 - two SF123As (6PT or C2+KT1)
N2 - three SF123As (9PT or C3+KT2)
N3 - 9AN+KT3 or 9NT [T3]
N4 - 6RT or 7Z [T4] (Also fits the G2R+TurboHead)
N5 - 8AX+KT5, 8NX+KT5 or 8XT [T5]
N62 - four SF123As (12PM/12ZM/Leopard)

MN15/MN16 - three SF123As (M3T/M9x0AB/M5xxAB/M97)
MN60/MN61 - four SF123As (M4/M98)
MN20/MN21 - six SF123As (M6/M5xxB)

The T1/T2/T4/T5 use the same T TurboHead.
The KT1/KT2/KT5 use the same KT TurboHead.

The SRTH TurboHead from LSP is interchangeable with the T1/T2/T4/T5 and KT1/KT2/KT5 and the 12PM/12ZM/Leopard.

There are two major styles of collar that attach the TurboHeads to the "Standard Body" The "KT" collar and the "Classic" collar. All TurboHeads that use these collars are interchangeable.

The T3 only fits the 9N
The KT3 only fits the 9AN

The T5 collar only fits the 8X
The KT5 collar only fits the 8AX/8NX

In general, the SRTH is better suited to the N2 lamp - over the years SureFire have experiement with the stochastic finish of the reflectors. Now-a-days the finish is more pronounced because the larger filaments of the modern lamps require more scattering. As a result, the "T" and "SRTH" TurboHeads general have a longer beam throw when using the very smal filament lamps such as the N1, N2, N3 and N5.

Re: What LA \'s can I run in the Surefire TurboHeads?

Yes you can but SureFire don't suggest this for "tactical" use because the outer spring contact (negative) of the "N" lamp assembly is shorter then that of the "MN" lamp assembly and 100% contact may be at risk if used as a WeaponLight or subject to harsh abuse.

Therefore the M3T (etc) uses the MN15 & MN16 and not the N2.
The M4 (etc) uses the MN60 & MN61 and not the N62.

I personally use the N2 one of my M3T's - I prefer the beam shape over the MN15. Only once during abusive field-testing of the M3T did I experience the "dodgy" contact caused by the N2's short spring contact being squashed by the shock isolation of the Millennium TurboHead when I was using the M3T as an impact tool (rather than flashlight). Fixed it by stretching the spring but SureFire don't want this to happen during operational use.

Hi Al,
Can a N2 LA be used in a KT1?

The N2 will fit in the KT TurboHead. By taking out the N1 from the KT1 and putting in an N2 you are making a KT2!
The KT2 will be underpowered by using only two SF123A's.
The KT2 requires three SF123A's.

KT TurboHead + N1 = KT1
KT TurboHead + N2 = KT2
KT TurboHead + N3 = KT3
KT TurboHead + N5 = KT5

KT4 is the Millennium TurboHead with MN15 & MN16 Lamp Assemblies.

T TurboHead + N1 = T1
T TurboHead + N2 = T2
T TurboHead + N3 = T3
T TurboHead + N4 = T4
T TurboHead + N5 = T5
