Can about 6 LED emitters be ganged on to one baseplate or would too much heat be produced?

You can put as many LEDs as you want on a mounting plate. The important thing is to make sure the mounting plate is bolted to a big enough heatsink, using thermal grease to ensure good heat transfer.
