Bridgelux touts new Silicon substrate development

I know this is still in the research stage, but at least we are seeing it from a company outside of Cree, Lumileds, or university research labs. Hopefully Bridgelux can come through on their 2-3 year timeframe on mass production.

Probably not. The substrate is simply what the LED die is grown on. The only thing which might affect lifetime is poorer thermal conductivity. Sapphire actually has poorer thermal conductivity than silicon, so this move might actually marginally increase life. Silicon carbide on the other hand is about twice as good as silicon, but harder to work with. I don't believe it has been widely used in LEDs.
