1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

Less than $50

I'd like to keep it within the $50 range, but am willing to go a little higher if necessary.

3) Format:

I want a flashlight.

4) Flashlight-specific format/size:

Every day carry small (2-4 inches).

5) Emitter/Light source:

LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)

6) Manufacturer:

____I want to buy a light from a traditional mass producing manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
____I would consider getting a light that is pieced together (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source). Under the right circumstances, this path can provide more options to the consumer to meet specific needs, and can often be easily upgradeable as technology improves.

I am open to either option, I don't see myself upgrading if I were to piece the light together. But I am willing to build a light if I can get a better finished product than buying prebuilt from a manufacturer.

7) What battery type do you want to use?

____I intend to use rechargeable nickel chemistry (NiCad, NiMH, NiZn)
____I intend to use lithium primary batteries (CR123, CR2, Energizer Advanced/Ultimate Lithium AA/AAA)
____I intend to use rechargeable lithium (li-ion) chemistry. Feel free to specify a size if you know which size you want (14500, RCR123/16340, 17500, 17670, 18650, etc.)

I would like to use eneloop AA rechargeables if possible, will consider other options if this reduces options.

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).

9) Throw vs. Flood: At what distance will you be most likely to use this light? Select all that apply.

____50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
____150+ yards (I want maximum throw possible)

This will be a backup light for longer distance lighting, I have a petzl myo rxp that serves as my primary light so I would like for it to have a farther throw with a more solid beam.

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
____30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
____90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)

This light will serve as a backup (spot) to my headlamp that is used for the majority of the time (navigation…), runtime isn't a huge concern as it will be used only for a few minutes at a time.

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).

I take pretty good care of my gear, but I'd like it to be able to take a beating if necessary.

12) Switch Type and location (choose all that apply):

____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).

I don't fully understand the difference, but I don't see it being a huge deciding factor.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
____I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's flashlights).

Leaning towards composite but will consider aluminum.

You're gonna have a very hard time finding an AA light that's under $50, under 4", and can throw 150 yards.

The Zebralight SC51 would be a good option, but it's about $70. A 4-Sevens Quark AA^2 Tactical also might fit your needs, but it's about 6" long. It's also a little over $50, but close. The Single AA version is not going to be bright enough for throwing light very far.

ya i figured but i was wondering if there were options i didnt know about out there. I found the Lumapower D-mini digital ($55). Is this a good light? i read a few reviews about it on here and it seems to be pretty decent. I couldnt find any info about throw though.

Look at the Eagletac models P100A2 and P20A2 MKI they use XP-E R2 and XR-E R2 which is better than XP-G for throw. I think 150 meters is right on their maximum range in the right conditions. I believe the P20 will slightly out throw the p100 and the P20 is better quality aesthetically. I think IIRC the P100A2 is close to 7k lux and the P20A2 Mark I is ~7.5k lux so you should be good at least out to 130 meters.

If these two lights interest you and you find yourself trying to decide which to get keep in mind the P20 comes with a clip, lanyard and holster while the P100 comes basically with nothing.
