If you always wait for the super, dream light, you're going to be waiting forever. Buy what's top notch now and enjoy it for a few years. I still love my TK40 and it doesn't bother me that there are brighter, more efficient lights, I still use it and appreciate what it is - a benchmark light that was the first of it's kind.

That said, I can't wait for 500 lumens from 2AA's for 2 hours.

I am working on it. Well except the 2 side by side 18650 thing. 2013 is probably about right. In the meantime you could always go for tomorrows flashlight today. The DEFT-edc LR ;) And I have Cree stock as well.

Not gonna happen.
2*18650 means 6AH.
2H runtime means 3A into the LED(s).
3A into an XML gives 910 lumens.

Cree labs are working on a 200 lm/w LED vs 160 lm/w of the XML.
Which will be 1137.5 lm at 3A.

If you accept 1 hour runtime you'll probably get 2250 lm.
But SST90 lights can do that today (with more than 2*18650).

If you accept 40 minutes runtime you'll probably get 3500 LED lm. Or ~2800 OTF lumens. Use oven gloves - that will be a 30 watt torch.

2 hour runtime means the batteries have to be 3X more efficient. Not gonna happen.
