hello everyone
as a newbie to cpf and not sure where to post these ?'s, i thought i'd start here and see where it goes. after looking at all the info out there on led flashlights, i'm not finding much on describing how the various types of flashlight controls work in the operation of the lights. I guess i'm trying to understand in simple terms either thru block diagrams or schematics how the light works with all the parts. reason i'm looking is i have a bunch of old misc lites that i might want to try and led. hope there's some help for me out there. tks

Howdy cobracon, and welcome to CPF!

First, check out the CPF Welcome Mat:
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?277224-The-Welcome-Mat-a-FAQ

Don't feel that you need to read or understand everything on that page. It's just a good way to become familiar with the lingo we use to discuss flashlights, and there is a LOT of good info there. Skim it and take what you need.

Next, you need to learn something about rechargeable batteries, and here is the best place to start for that:
Battery University:
http://batteryuniversity.com/

And here are some fine Flashlight review sites:
http://www.light-reviews.com/reviews.html
http://www.flashlightreviews.ca
http://www.lygte-info.dk/review/Reviews UK.html

We have a section here on CPF devoted to modifying flashlights, be sure and check it out:
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?17-Homemade-and-Modified-Flashlights-Discussion

Now, as to modifying your old lights to LED....... while of course it is possible, I think you might find that in the long run it's generally less expensive to spend some time reading here on CPF, define what kind of uses you have for a light, and then buy a quality LED light that fits those needs. That way you not only get the benefits of the newest LED technology, but you get the most modern electronics as well.

In the mean time, you can learn how to clean your old lights. A bit of contact cleaner can go a long way towards restoring them to like new condition, and will give you some nice backup lights.

I hope that helps :). Have fun!
