Thrunite Ti3, first impressions

nice small, lightweight 3 mode twisty with a sublumen low.

always starts on the lowest mode, no memory weighs just over 3/4oz
very handy for seeing keyholes, reading labels, navigating at indoor distances, and as a task light for arms length...

the NW is really ugly, and the CW is not much better:

but Im a snob, so...

I changed the LED to High CRI.

The pill unscrews easily:

remove centering ring:

unsolder the red and black wires

and remove LED Star

reflow a new LED:

They make nice beams w stock reflector:

then I heard about a pebbled TiR:

really fun floody beam upgrade:

very satisfying beam and CRI upgrade to a handly little light :)

Having a Ti3 NW led I appreciate your mods for higher CRI. It has been the only thing that I didn't 100% love.

What are your lumen specs on the 3000K and 3500k non TIR mods?

lumens vary a bit by battery, and individual drivers vary

but I did my best to get reasonably accurate numbers,
on my meter this is what I got with a fully charged eneloop aaa

for reference before the mod
NW stock light (it is now the sw45k in the photo below)
0.03, 16, 135

the other two hosts had 10x higher minimums of 0.3, not what a spec sheet says.

and here are the modded outputs with reflector for the LEDs I used (I have not built a 3500k yet):

fwiw, I was suprised to see that the TiR had very little lumen penalty, only about 6% reduction.. .

Both the TiR and reflector versions easily illuminate a painting on the far wall of my living room, 7 yards away..

the TiR just has a more diffused hotspot.. but not a significant throw penalty either, when used at indoor distances..

the variations between driver outputs was actually more significant than the reduction in output I would have expected from a 3000k compared to a 4500k. You can see the 3000k ended up having a higher maximum than the 4500k, but a lower medium. The differences are less than 25%. That is not a visually noticeable difference..

in terms of illumination, the 3000k "looks" dimmer, due to warmth, if used during times when the brain is daylight adapted. otoh the higher CCT LEDs "look" too blue when waking up in the middle of the night..

courses for horses :)

Looks like you have the ti3 v2. Not sure if anything g changed from the ti3 other than thicker aluminum. I have one of each and find the NW xpg2 to have an excellent tint and beam. Got a handful more from their recent $6 sale coming that I'm going to swap to high cri I think...

Awesome mini vice there. What is the proper name so I can search them out??

Very neat mod with the TIR lens. It seems like I never saw those used much until more recently, in some of the small AA and AAA lights. Don't know if it's a cost thing or what.

A long while back, Lowes was selling their "Task Force" lights with a TIR, smooth face (no grid). It was quite the thrower for the time with the Cree emitter upgrade.

I just recently got a Lumintop EDC01 and I think the beam is pretty neat with the TIR on it. But I also wonder if a small AAA light could be made into a good thrower with a narrow angle, non-grid TIR lens. Hmmmm.

the pebbled TiR is good for close range, things I can reach with my hands

there are also throwy TiR available, where I got the pebble TiR, if you want to mod your own

off the shelf there is the
Sofirn C01S
has a clear throwy TiR, quite the pencil beam

for this Ti3 build I wanted a wide diffused beam
Pebble is good for me to see things in my hands and at close range

Oh really, I had looked at those briefly but I didn't realize they were more throw oriented. Interesting.

I went with the Lumintop for the 3 well-spaced modes, but I might have to give the Sofirn a try too. And I like the fact that it has color options, since it gets monotonous having nothing but black flashlights all the time (maybe that's just me! ha).

Only thing I don't like about the Lumintop is the mode memory, and it's High-medium-low sequence, but that's minor quibble for the price, and it's a perfect indoors/short range light.

Thanks for the info!

thanks for the info about the EDC01 mode memory and HML.. I did not know those details
glad you like the close range lens option

I found a couple C01S beamshots..
clear TiR on left is C01R, Tool AAA reflector in middle, C01 5mm LED on right

Cool photos; thanks for that. The clear TIR beam does look like what I remember from the Task Force light. I'll have to see if I can find any C batteries and fire that thing up again. Haven't used it in forever. I had bought some Eneloop adapters so I could run AA in it, but the spring on the head won't contact the end of a AA.
