Newbie question (how to drive a 5watter save?)

On average, I've found 1/2 ohm to be pretty safe. For my 5W white and royal blues, they've been driven initally at about 800mA-1A on freshly charged batteries. Then the current settles down to around 700mA for most of the battery life. These are 2100mAh Energizer AAs.
If you want to be safer, or are using larger cells (A, C, D, etc), use 1 ohm. That'll lower the current to very safe levels.
