I purchased a KL1 last week for use on a custom E3 (3x123,2xAA,2x17500) body and it's a perfect addition to this body but it's still old tech.

Is anyone making a low output single mode head SF says 30 lumens which is pretty usable I'm just surprised that it produces the heat it does. Figure there has to be a more efficient led/driver now.

3-9V single mode in the 30 Lumen range ?

That's a tough range for most drivers to operate reliably. Down to 2AA cells? Between eff and load losses that range is not ideal. The problem is dropping down below the LED's Vf once its in direct drive. The MDC does well but its a 3.2 to 9v and it is WAY brighter than what is being sought.
