My criteria:

the same size as a Nuwai Q-III

runs on AA or AAA batteries (NiMH rechargables or alks)

LED

Two setting -- as bright as the Q-III, and one for moon mode

Priced around $80

I think it's possible, though. About the size of a 3AAA setup in a circle, it would be pretty close to a QIII in size. Runtime probably wouldn't be so hot, though, and the dual-stage setup would be tricky as to make it close to the same size unless you did a resistor route. .

…which would hurt battery life even further. As I said, it's not going to be possible for a while. There's a reason all of those lights use lithiums.

The closest easily available light today that is anything like this would be the Streamlight Jr. But it is a bit big of course...and only one brightness setting.

You'll never find a bright light at that size.. But I would recommend the Pelican M1. Heres Why: The M1 is a luxeon LED, And it is only $35 dollars on batterystation. It will come out in about 3 weeks. Or get the longbow micra for $60.
