How waterproof are MM\'s?

The package used to show it as
being water resistant. Now it
says nothing. Still has rubber
O rings but just not sure
how tight the tolerances are for
keeping water out. I really don't
feel like sacrificing an MM to
test it's water resistance but
can it be submersed?

Thanks

Re: How waterproof are MM\'s?

You mean "MiniMag," right?

I used one for years hiking in all kinds of weather, and never had a problem. It was in a pouch on my pack strap on my upper chest. It was exposed to heat, dust, rain, snow, you name it. It got knocked around a lot too.

I don't specifically recall ever using it underwater, but I would not worry about doing so -- pretty robust technology. Just take it apart and dry it out if it gets wet.

You might want to apply a liberal amount of silicone grease to its 4 o-rings before testing it under water (not petroleum jelly as the instructions say). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Dat's what I thought. I guess BM's are the same?
Years ago the MM packaging used to show it
tipped and rain all over it, and it' doesn't even
mention "water resistant" anymore which is a far cry
from waterproof"...a term compaines are hesitant to use.

Where could I get silicone grease? HW store?

Thanks

"I guess BM's are the same? . . ."

No, actually bowel movements (BMs) are hydrophyllic, and basically come apart in water.

Yes, my experience is that big Mags are just as water-tight /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No offense or anything mykall, but I think you are confusing people by abbreviating some things you say. If you can avoid that, it would be great. Thanks.

Re: How waterproof are MM\'s?

I have used Minimags while swimming in lakes and pools. While I never found significant water leakage, the stock mag's did tend to let a slight bit of moisture in - just enough to fog up the lens after taking the light out of the water. I imagine that silicone grease, as pointed out, would prevent even this.

I don't think you would want to much beam adjusting while the light is wet.

If I remember, Mag has a question and answer about this somewhere on theor site or in their literature. I remember that the company stance is that the light is essentially waterproof for normal use.

I really like Mags. The only thing wrong with them is old technology.

Re: How waterproof are MM\'s?

My only experience really testing MMs around water would be using them during rainstorms and I just threw one into the sink for a few minutes. I've never had a failure. The only time I've ever fouled up a Mini is when I left batteries in one for a couple years and they leaked. I really like Minimags, too, especially because they are 'common'-looking even when modded, therefore, not as likely to walk away at work or at school like some of my more exotic looking gear does. And when modded, they give good output on universal AAs.

Well every time I put my MM's in water the candy shell always melts off! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif
