    Assembling a Bike Light--Need Advice

Re. fog: best foglight I ever had on a bike was a Lupine Spe-lu (www.lupine.de) made up out of 26 5mm LEDs and mounted low on the bike. Under normal circumstances it wasn't anything special (lots of light but no throw to speak of), but drive into a fogbank and the whole world lit up. Putting...

    Silva L1

Another pro: very good throw. This is the headlamp if you want incan throw with LED reliabiltity and runtime. Plus it's easy to adjust (no ratchet). But try before you buy; seems there are several sizes of headband around. It helps if you remove the buckle and sew the ends back together. Mark.

    The Wallet Thread!

Re: Has anyone tried one of these super thin wallets? Here's another super thin wallet: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/litefold_xp_ultralight_wallet.html

    PT Apex - Disappointing throw

If you want throw get a Silva L1. VERY focussed beam (better than many incans), just not very comfortable to wear (but it helps if you let out the headband a bit). Or mod it with a headband and battery holder from another 4AA headlight. Hm, wonder if it'll run on two Pila's?

    What uses pocket clips?

You could use a nurse's watch (aka lapel watch); I don't like wearing wristwatches, so bought a cheap nurse's watch, removed the pin and attched it to my key ring. Don't know how long it will last there, but it appears quite sturdy, and was only 12 Euro anyway. Plus there's awhole raft of...

    LED Foglights?

I used to have a Lupine light on my bike with 26 5mms, and at night in heavy fog it was simply amazing. Turned night into day. Not much use in clear weather however; lots of light but no throw at all. I'm thinking of mounting it on my trike specifically as foglight but it'd need a seperate batt.

    Serrated or plain edge

Awfully difficult to find a left-handed SE knife. For us southpaws the serrations are on the wrong side, so I'll stick to plain.

Opinions/Comments: Custom LED Bike Light...What would you want?

Plenty of good (and often expensive) bike lights available already. Only thing missing is a bright "dipped beam" type of light. If you can build that, I might be interested. Remote control would be nice too (I ride recumbents, so the light is a long way from my handlebar), wireless remote (like...

    any advantage to 5mm LEDs?

At really close range the Tikka + is better than the XP. I'd still prefer the XP, even though I use headlamps a lot for reading. You never know when you need a bit of throw (and the Tikka XP is small enough to be on your person at all times). Paid hardly more for my XP than I did for the Tikka...

    Headlamp storage

I usually just stuff them in a pocket... Tikka's and others without an over-the-head-strap can be worn around your neck; out of the way but ready in a moment. At home I just dangle them from doorknobs, bedposts, bicycle handlebars etc. Guess I'm never more than a step or two away from a...

Need help with some headlamp pros and cons.

Seems to me if you don't need all that much throw a Tikka XP would be a fine choice. I have a few Tikkka's and Tikka+'s and they're highly reliable and very useful lights. The Myo XP, in my mind, is to big/heavy for the amount of light it produces; if you don't mind the extra bulk you're better...

    Silva L1 Beamshots .. help

I've been told the newer straps are longer. Removing the buckle helps too (got hat size 57 and it fits snugly with the ends of the strap just sewed together). I LIKE the spot; perfect for cycling (on road, that is). You have to move your head around a bit occasionally, but no more than you would...

Suggestions for good AA LED-only headlamp? Myo XP? Others?

I've been using a Silva L1 (mostly for cycling) and it has very good throw, good battery life and useful dimming levels. The strap on mine was too short for even medium-size heads (the newer ones are said to be longer) and the twin battery compartments should be further forward for comfort (was...

    Mild FedEx rant

Only 2 days? You should try FedEx Netherlands; it normally takes them 1 week to get a package delivered, and you get to pay extra taxes too (€65 for the 4+). There's at least anecdotal evidence they're not much better in France and UK. Give me the postal services anytime.
