Re: 500 Lumen - AAA Flashlight (photos)

This reminds me of Henry Ford and the V-8 story from Think and Grow Rich. Roughly the story goes that one day Ford called in all his top engineers and sat them down at a table and said, "I want to make a V8 engine". Every single one of them said, "It's impossible. It can't be done." Ford, replied with, "Thank you for your input. Now go do it." and he called the meeting.

6 months later he called them all back and said, "How's the V8 coming?" They all responded with, "It can't be done. We've tried everything!" He said, "Thank you, keep working"

They left and went back and worked and worked. At the end of the year he called them back and they said, "Listen. We've told you this can't be done. We've been trying for a year now and it just can't be done." He said, thank you - keep working.

Well, I am pretty certain at least one of us owns or has owned a V8 in our lifetime....and I am certain that I will own a 500 lumen Torpedo in a AAA format of some sort.

Keep up the good fight....

There was a post here:

joe1512 said:
Good luck getting it to work. I personally have to add myself to the list of critics who don't think it is possible. As stated 500 lumens = 1.2 Amps at 2.9 volts assuming you use the U2 bin instead of T6 (which is 1.35 amps). An alkaline produces 1.5 volts, so with a step up to 2.9 v, it would need about 2.5 amps of current draw. There is absolutely no way to make this work. An eneloop with 1.2 V, would need to crank out almost 3 amps which is not possible either

Your reply was:

I don't think your response was adequate. There are heat/safety concerns, and there is even doubt about whether your projection of 500 lumens is feasible at all, even if it is only for a few seconds.

Lots of people are enthusiastically (perhaps naively) jumping on the bandwagon for this light, but you have not convinced some of us that the thing will work at all, let alone work safely.

Crap, so it's been mathematically proven that we're all getting trolled?

I'm not even mad. I never did care about 500l (in fact I'd prefer it not be anywhere near that), just so long as he's actually making something that's a tighten for off twisty, because it would be among only two other currently available edc's with that U.I. on the market at all. I've just been assuming all along that he would at some point have to listen to reason & dial it back down from that level of insanity anyway. Now had it been a single medium mode tighten-for-off AA twisty or something a little too on the nose, I would have been real paranoid. But if he never makes anything at all, guess we've all been had. I don't care. This somehow makes it more fun, like whispering something from an M. Night Shyamalan movie:

Do you believe in... The Guy With No Name?

Great story, I think that type of thing happens all the time. I do believe in The Guy With No Name. But stop worrying about trying to argue with the skeptics here. Now is not the time. Now is the time to log off of cpf, & just go get to work on making it!

Hi Grytpype [big blah-blah] I owe you
I counted about fifty lines of bluster and bollxxxx in that post, but you didn't answer the point about whether what you are claiming is either safe or even possible. Just a lot of hot air, so far.

This will run on standard AAA's (1.5V) as well as Li-Ion's.
Do you still stand by that?

I don't even care for AAA lights of any kind, but I sure do like "the guy with no name"! Your charisma, wit, and refusal to be discouraged by "negative naysayers" are qualities to be admired! I'll definitely keep up with your progress, and wish you the best of luck!

P.S. Grytpype, my suggestion to you is to unsubscribe from this thread! It might help you.

I was wondering who was writing the ludicrous specs of DX flashlights, now I know ! :)
And lot of naive people ready to believe them and buy !

Grytpype, I have to agree with naked2. You probably don't want to come across in the way that you have been on this thread. It would be good to unsubscribe from this thread, all that negativity and anger just isn't any fun. I think most of us are here to see what the nameless one can do. Win or loose, its cool to watch and dream.

In addition, I'd like to wager that man_with_no_name is a proctologist. He's looking for just the perfect liiiitle light to use at work.

Re: 500 Lumen - AAA Flashlight (photos)

It has nothing to do with being naive. I dont care if it's 350 or 500 lumens. The fact is, there is no one offering a xm-l driven as hard as it can in 10440 format. And i want one, safe or not. Stuff like supercars and guns have bigger safety issues. Can't go full trottle with a ferrari for 10 min, but someone might try. And die in a fireball.
I'd like to see a little aaa "superlight" The only safety i need is lo voltage cut off. I would love a light that pushes it's limits, and like the supercar, the 10440 might end up in fireball if it's not given some respect hehe). I got too many "volvo's" in my drawer, they are very safe , but not so fun :)

Hear hear jorn..... give him a go and lets see what is produced.....

I have CR123 lights that are too hot to hold after 5 min or less..... did it stop me buying them.... of course not.... you don't have to run them on thermonuclear meltdown all the time but it is good to have that otion for short runs.....

What nonsense is that? Are you trying to silence me? You suggest it would "help me" if I unsubscribe from this thread. Help me how? Or do you mean it would help YOU, so you won't hear any more uncomfortable questions about this light that have still not been answered?

I suggest instead of trying to silence me you get back on topic and join me in asking whether this light will work as originally proposed by the OP.

A single AAA alkaline/NiMH, 500 lumens, yes or no? Heat and safety issues, yes or no? Is it a viable project as specified? If not, is it just a pipe-dream, or is it a potential pipe-bomb?

Let's have some answers.

Re: 500 Lumen - AAA Flashlight (photos)

It clearly won't be 500 lumens with a Ni-mh/Alkaline, but that was never claimed, just that it can be 500 lumens, and also run Ni-mh/Alkaline.

It could well be 500 with an IMR 10440 cell, just with very low runtime. Heat would be an issue, but he claims it will have thermal regulation/shutdown. If done properly safety shouldn't be an issue.

It sure won't be practical, and will be very specialised to very short runtimes with a specific cell type. But it could meet it's main claim of 500 lumens in a AAA sized light. We will have to wait and see.

I think others were suggesting that the stress of criticising and worrying about the claims of the OP were getting to you, and it would help you psychologically by putting it out of your mind by unsubscribing.

Re: 500 Lumen - AAA Flashlight (photos)

Hey Grytpype why don't you read all the posts to find your answer? Here I'll help you.

Thanks for asking.
The Torpedo is currently still in the R&D phase and there are many issues to work through as has been mentioned.
Please keep in mind also, as previously noted that 500 lumens will be a short burst mode and exact duration/specs are still under test.

I have shared prototype images and spec targets as some people had requested to see more and Im glad to have everyone's feedback.

For now, still finalizing the feasibility of the driver requirements at the required size.
Once the driver is tested the body design (mainly sizing) can be completed, first prototype created,
and then verification of modes and operation in the actual body.

Do you have issues with comprehension?
As I have said before....

IS IT POSSIBLE?
YES

Could a AAA 1.5V power an XM-L for a 1 second burst with the right circuit?
YES

I have ALREADY stated that the duration/output may/will vary based on results of final R&D.

CAN A AAA SIZED LIGHT WORK ON BOTH 1.5V & Li-Ion?
YES.
There is a search feature in CPF. Use it.

IS IT SAFE?
The question is "How safe or unsafe" and "safe enough for who".
The SAFETY will be determined by the final spec.

WHICH PART OF "planning/verifying" DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

There are many CPF ONLY versions of lights that are considered unsafe for the average user.

If you have doubt in your life, may I suggest you seek help elsewhere.

Regarding your repeated questions, which have been answered, consider post 177 a rule of participation.
Go and read it again, and if you can not follow the guidelines,
and at the very least comprehend the answers and content within this thread,
REFRAIN from posting further in this thread.

I don't intend to waste my time, listing the individual post numbers just for you and the burden of doubts you carry.

Whether your believe or not...comprehend or not...

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" (thank you Mr. Gable)

Now stop wasting my time, and find somewhere else to vent your personal frustrations.

and I hope you have a great day anyway!
