You are spliting hairs my friend, 10 hr runtime is a must for any serious flashaholic looking to venture into the wild rain forest. Ain\'t no batteries in the Amazon

Ha-Ha. That's classic. I can see it now. My curare tipped blowgun with a hand carved tactical rail mounted with a E01.

It is definitely the blue/purple tint and the artifacts in the spot that disappointed me off. I compare the E01 against another $15 single mode light - the KD buckle light - and KD has far more spill, a warmer color and an artifact-free spot. The E01's 10 hour run time is an interesting specification but in a practical sense having to swap batteries every couple of weeks instead of once a month don't balance against the output of these two lights. I guess I'm looking for the E02, the very same design, form factor and quality build but with a higher-end LED.

The buckle light is junk, it has a nice beam sure, but the build quality is not even close to the E01. I don't think the buckle light would last a week on a key chain. Also, this light has a lifetime warranty. Better coating. This is a light begging to be carried all the time.

Has anyone done a stress/durability test on these lights? My experience with Fenix has been variable. Some of the lights are good, but some are variable from sample to sample. I have 4 Civictors - two have output that is 100 lux less than the other two.

I have an Arc CS on my keychain because of the size and durability of the light, and now have a stainless Peak Matterhorn 3AAA in my coin pocket as well.

Between the two, runtime is not a problem for most scenarios, and I get really good reliability and output from both lights - better output from the Peak.

Can the Fenix handle drops? That is an important question for me.

Durability of the E01 is what is still unknown at this point. It's only been available for week or two so far. I doubt they've seen enough abuse yet to render a verdict.

I don't think Fenix makes Civictor.

Have you seen the T1 abuse tests from a few months back? And the P3D abuse review before that? Fenix products have a good track record of being tough.

I don't disagree. The KD is behind the Fenix in build quality. You can easily see there the two manufacturers put their money. My comparison illustrate the point that there are compromises when creating a product at a price point. Just hope that Fenix sees what a great platform they have with the E01 and an upgrade with a SSC or Cree would be my idea of a killer EDC light.

Two people very dear to me now have shiny new flashlights that they say are the coolest. I hope everyone enjoys theirs as much.

Nuff said.

1) L0D lacks a true "low" mode IMO.
2) L0D is not regulated, its brightness diminishes with battery voltage
3) L0D has 100Hz flicker when running in anything but 100% output


IMHO though, it isn't really worth the expense of putting the XR-E into a light that is strictly for low output. Instead, I believe the L0D should be upgraded to have the option of a low, regulated, non-flickering output.

LOD isn't truly regulated, but it's output is pretty darn flat. You can use it like a single mode if you want by just using medium (30 lumens, 3.5 hours). But it's nice to have more modes there if you need them.

If you're bothered by the PWM, you must hate fluorescent lights also, since they flicker on nearly the same frequency. It's a non-issue for most people.

100% agreed. I always wanted a current regulated L0D. I love flat output curves, and I hate the pwm flicker. That's why my L0D never get used much. The flickering makes me dizzy, and the drop in output is annoying too.

>95% of the fluorescent lights I encounter (at work/home etc) flicker at >20,000 Hz, which is completely unnoticeable. Even the 120Hz flicker of the old school fluorescents that are still around in old buildings/stores aren't as bad though. Those lights flicker following a sine-wave pattern, gradually getting brighter and dimmer, reaching zero twice for each period on the 60Hz sine wave. This is not as noticeable as a 100Hz pulse wave which is completely on for 15% of the cycle, then completely off for 85% of the cycle (L0D on the the lowest mode).

About the only time I notice the strobing on old fluorescents is when I am turning my head with the light directly in my field of vision. I notice the L0D strobing though when anythinglit by the flashlight is moving.

So I hope that Fenix is listening. Smallest possible AAA form factor, lots of knurling, HAIII, single mode, head twist on-off, no PWM, no UI, Cree beam quality, regulated with reasonable runtime, and a price under $25US, A simple, elegant, good looking light. Who can resist?

The lumen rating on the L0D is only correct on totally fresh batteries, it will drop much in the first minutes befor it flattens out. Where the L1D will have about the same output all the way.

Oh, and the pwm flicker is WAY WAY WAY worse than fluorescent lighting. Even the really old ones. I tried to take a picture with my digital cam while illuminating the object with the L0D.. The camera went crazy. And have you ever tried the L0D outside in snow or rain? That makes you really dizzy.

Not single mode please, i like the modes, but i need them to be CURRENT REGULATED.

Basically this would be a return of the L0P, or an AAA version of the P1CE, both of which are around $40. I'd buy one. I'd also like an AA version.

The problem with current regulating is that if you design it around a 1.5V AAA with efficiencies optimised for it, etc., and then some smartarse puts a 10440 in it, the circuit will just die and they'll be like "OMG FENIX SUXORZ". At least with PWM the light is usable with a 10440 (most the time).

The halfway house that fenix are currently at is a bit annoying for me, though. Either make it so the L0D will fry with a 4.2V lithium, no exceptions, or make it completely compatible!

The L1D and other current regulated lights from fenix won't die if you put a lithium in it, they will just go into direct drive, but will not be as overdriven as the L0D.

The L0D will be much harder pushed with a 10440 than an L1D with a 14500. And you can't seriously blame fenix for the L0D being able to handle lithium batts without going :poof:.

They never claimed the L0D to be able to handle them. And they NEVER claimed the L0D to be "half way compatible". Someone just had an idea to use them, and the light survived. So what? Should fenix change them so that it WILL go :poof: if someone put a 10440 in it??

That's like if I put gasoline in my diesel car and call the manufacturer to complain because the motor didn't brake!

I would really go for a version of the E01 with a Cree. The LED wouldn't suffer from lumen maintenance like a 5mm LED because the die has a much larger heat sink through which to dissipate heat, even if there really is no additional heat sink other than the slug. The added advantage of an improved tint is also very desirable to me. Sure, it would not have as much throw with the same form factor, but that would be fine for my intended uses. A reflector could be added of course at the expense of greater length. I think a light like this with the same driver they are using now for the E01 would sell well at $20.
