Regarding lifetime, it occurred to me that I've never noticed any directions about using the lamp in a base-up or base-down orientation. I wonder if a base-up position will shorten it's life as the heat rises back into the bulb.

It makes no difference to the heat sink if it points up or down, it will be the same temperature either way.

Depends. Vegas. If the lamp is in an enclosed fixture the heat will tend to rise and collect around the top. In a base-up configuration this will concentrate the heat around the lamp's electronics, but if it's running base-up the heat will tend to rise off the dome and escape. Some lamps are specifically designed for base-down operation only for this reason.

I love these bulbs. I bought one a bout 18 months ago when they were feit brand and it has been great. I went ahead and bought 10 of them and they have been working well, but I did have one fail. I have the package and I am headed back to Lowes to replace it.

The $7 Feit versions of this bulb have disappeared from the Costco near me (Summerlin, Las Vegas) :( Too bad, as I wanted to pick up a few more at that price. The $11 Lowes versions are still around.

Just an update here on the bulb performance. This is not a scientific test or anything since I did not test the bulbs at initial use (I had never planned on it). Anyway, I have 3 of these bulbs. Bulb 1 has been used in a bedroom ceiling fixture for the last 8 months. I have not timed it, but estimate 3 hrs per day for 8 months which is about 720 hours. Bulb 2 has been in use in a lamp with about 100 hrs. Bulb three has not been used. With my light meter, I get these readings:

1. 130.5 cd
2. 127.5 cd
3. 124.5 cd

I can't explain it, but the longer the use, the brighter it is. It is probably just normal variation. In testing LEDs I have found that they can get slightly brighter with some use before they start fading. It was not line voltage variation as it stayed constant while taking reading. Anyway, so far, so good.

Lowe's in Canada recently started carrying this bulb (Feit) for $12.98 CDN, so I have a couple.

In spite of being hemispherical, the dispersion when used in a wall fixture pointing up, with a frosted glass shade, is very good; and the colour is nice. Overall, cause for optimism, hoping they last the rated 25k hours.

That is 1/2 the price of the Philips equivalent at Home Depot Canada. Have to figure out how to get to a local Lowes. (kind of awkward when I don't have a car.)

The Philips AmbientLED 12W/800 lumen bulb is down to $28 at HD in Canada; brighter
than the Feit bulb but ~2x the price. In Lowes, the bulbs were in the lighting section,
not with the rest of the other bulbs. Equivalent of the Feit bulb can probably be had
for ~$20 or so, such as the Sylvania equivalent which I think has longer rated lifetime.

PS we need to get MTP (**) working, to get you to Lowes!

I tried dimming this bulb with a cheap in-line socket dimmer, and it dims smoothly down to zero. On the way down, I could see the 18 SMT LEDs inside (as noted earlier in the thread).

I believe that this bulb uses a pair of bridglelux arrays, which would resemble a pair of 3x3 SMD formations.

EDIT - my mistake, I'm thinking of the Home Depot house brand "40W" bulb I have on my desk lamp

We've been collecting Goniospectroradiometer data, Integrating Sphere data, and thermal images of several LED bulbs. The plan is compile the data and correlate that with CAD models and simulations to generate IES ray sets and IGES files along with reports about how each bulb is made and performs. We'll make them available for download at somepoint in the near future although I can't say when. Not because it's a secret but because making the website isn't my thing.

":) Do you work for NIST?" Man I wish!! Those people have all the great toys. On the other hand they also have to justify their positions continually for funding. I am a partner in a Photonics Engineering Consulting company and we have a joint venture to manufacture our own HBLED so we need a lot of toys too.

Hey this is really a great thread to post about with regards to the Led energy efficient bulbs, they are a great source of energy conservation with the adequate & powerful brighter lights compared to the normal cfl bulbs..
