Walking alone at twilight or darkness is not advised. A flashlight might get you some moments but in the case of a mountain lion or 2 legged, they will come up from behind. Do you have a dog? That can help. Another vote for large can pepper spray. We have Counter Assault but also the marine/sport horn available. Our stun gun gets the dogs´ attention; just the sound (don´t keep the button down more than a second or so unless you are contacting an assailant, it is not good for the contacts) gets another moment for initiative. A decent quality stungun will be rechargeable. I tested it on myself and it HURTS.
Thank you for the input. I appreciate the ideas.

I've oftentimes taught beginner students on self-defense.
Lesson #1 ~ You literally cannot defend your life without hurting your attacker. Physically impossible to do so. Doesn't matter if that attacker has two legs or four. A powerful light is useful for identifying something off in the distance or checking a long, straight trail at night. Just like a human-being, shinning a light in an animals face might cause it to stop and turn its head away for a split-second. But even a primitive animal has enough sense to keep its eyes closed and charge straight ahead at the last location it remembers it saw its target.

But after lesson #1, I tell any students who wish to leave; please do so now because I can't spend hours re-wiring their thought process after years or decades of that horribly ingrained belief. Wouldn't be fair to waste the time of the other students.

Whether it's a bullet to their gut or a blast of pepper spray to the eyes, either way; you're hurting that animal in order to stop its attack on you. As far as what's more humane, folks forget that individuals have ended up blind after taking a massive blast of pepper spray to the eyes. I mean permanently blind. Doesn't always happen. But happens enough. Personally, if that person who got blasted in the face was trying to kill or horribly injure another person; yeah not much sympathy from me.
Sobering thoughts indeed. Never thought of the eyes closed and then charge ahead.

Spray is a tricky thing to use, you may get some of it back at yourself, not something you want durings an encounter with a wildlife. there are other means besides a gun, not as effective but maybe just enough to get away, in combination with a bright flashlight. We do not know if wildlife he encounters is aggressive, or whether or not he wants to hurt it.
Don't want to hurt wildlife unless really need to Around here there are some black bears, but usually skunks, possums, deer and some dogs roaming free in wooded areas.

Before people carried guns they carried swords. Very effective, unless the other guy has a gun. If its an animal & it has a gun its probably a demon (or something). Or you're on drugs. I dont think bullets work against ghosts, tho ironically a flashlight might. Best to keep one on you just in case of a haunting. Alternatively you could use an enchanted sword. you're welcome.

I wish there was a "Clap!" reaction to give this summary. Alas, no dice, so a reply will have to do.

Apart from being sensible , any good 4 or 3x18650 light would work nicely . Acebeam \ thrunite \ fenix \ nitecore \ olight all make them . I have a klarus g30 3x18650 light . 900 lumens is never hot. 300 is plenty of walking light , and it's easy to get to the 2500 lumen mark .

There's plenty of 4x 18650 lights but too big for my smaller hands .

I just noticed the Emissar D4SV2 26650. The XP-L options are out of stock right now, but can order now with SST-20 in 5000K for 4000Lm of neutral white. It's also configurable without FET in 2 channels of linear driver, presumably without PWM, with 2 sets of different LED if desired, so can even mix color temperatures. I'd run it with UH2655 for safety, amps and capacity. Coming to my pocket next year. How did I miss this monster?
