I have used pairs of protected, and unprotected cells in my 27LT, with no problems so far.

Now I have seen this thread though, I think I will stick to a 17670.

Thanks for the warning. :)

Re: Problem with 27LT & R123?!?! Don't Use!

Hi guys,
Well although the incidents of a problem are seemingly isolated, they do appear to be real and for that reason, I can only conclude that the DBx2 driver is not compatible with 2xR123 cells! No idea what the nature of the problem is but I can't support or recommend the use of 2xR123 when it is clear that this can cause death to the converter in some cases. Sorry! :(

I have run mine (a 27LT-S) mostly on a 17670 but occasionally on 2 R123a's.
The 17670 gives more runtime, and it's just as bright for most of it.
It still has both levels, but I think I'll stick to the 17670 from now on
(until/unless I can figure out a way to get an 18650 in there).

I just about always use rechargeables.

Hi McGizmo,

Where do I return mine for service? I still would like it repaired. I will pay for the repair. If I can buy a new board and replace it myself, that would be fine too.

Also, this link should be updated (IMHO) with the possible now known problems for it states you can use 2 x R123 (or up to 14v input)... http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?p=1412239#post1412239

Partial link quote...

"The driver, LED and batteries

The DBx2 (DownBoy) is a current regulated buck driver which means you can use any battery configuration from the Vin of your LED up to 14V input voltage. Considering the physical limitations of the light this leaves the following battery combos as realistic alternatives:
- 2xCR123
- 2xLi-Ion (R123)
- 1xLi-Ion --> only the slim PILA 168S will fit, the 168A is too fat."

Njoy...

Glad I read this thread, I just got my 27LT-S today and I believe I will be sticking with the 17670's. Does it matter whether or not it is a Protected cell?
