Yes, once the L1D bodies come out - same head and tailcap on LxD series.

funny, I am in the opposite situation, I have a L1D CE and am awaiting the sale (not yet available) of the 2xAA tube so I can have both options.
it's supposed to be happening, perhaps as early as March.
of course the head is the same for both the L1D CE and the L2D CE, which makes perfect sense from the manufacturing and cost control point of view.

Yes it does work I have tried the L2D CE head on the L1D CE body,
It then becomes a L1D CE as the heads are identical on both lights
