what are my options for a longrunning low output led for camping tasks? id prefer 1 or 2 lumens, maybe 3 max. prefer AA or AAA but open to all suggestions. thanks

Nitecore D10 or D20.

You may be better off with a headlamp for hands free use. Check out Zebralight's H50.

I like the standard energizer headlamp from walmart, around $12.00. Actually another thing I do is get the green chem lights. They are $1.00 each from wal-mart. I break one and either wear it or throw it in a pocket or the tent. It provides low levels of light that will last all night. Once your eyes become adjusted to the darkness these things make a lot of light in a tent. I just throw it under a below so it cant be seen and then if nature calls at 4:00 AM, I just move things around and the light will show itself and. Just my .02 cents.

Second That. That's the first lights that came to mind.

The lowest setting on the nitecore it pretty much useless if any good amount of light is present, but off in the woods or something its plenty to get around.
I haven't received my zebra light yet.

I agree that the D10 would be a good choice. The low is around 3 lumens but you also have the option of brighter light is needed. It does have a memory for the last light level used so if you happen to use it on max (which IIRC is in the 100 lumen range) and you turn it off and then later want to turn it on in the tent you will be hit with brighter light than you want. You have remember to turn it off from minimum if you want minimum next time.

You might consider the Photon Proton Pro. Goes very low to very bright and also has a red LED in case you want to preserve your night vision.

Gerber Infinity Ultra, 1AA, 10 Hr runtime.
Fenix E01, 1 AAA, >10 hr runtime on e2-Lithium.
Both these are about 10 lumens tho.:candle:

Another Proton Pro recommendation. The only problem might be is that it comes on at max white LED, before you can ramp down. On the other hand the red comes on at an extremely low level before you ramp up.

From I want an EDC with a < 1 lumen low, low - what are my options??
Here is a compiled list of lights with a low low per your suggestions for those that might be looking for this as well. Thanks for all your help! :grin2:
  • Novatac 120P
  • LiteFlux LF2, LF3, LF5
  • Ra Twisty
  • Photon Freedom Microlight
  • Draco
  • Titan
  • NiteCore Ex10/D10
  • Insight H2X Typhoon
  • ARCmania Extreme III
  • Night Ops Gladius w/SSC P4
  • CPF Limited Edition
  • Spartanian 2
  • fauxton
  • HDS
  • Spy 007
  • Zebralight H60 (11/7)
  • PalLight
Ok the Spy might be a bit rich for camping :sigh: and not all take AA/AAA or meet the <1. But it's a good place to start. I'll throw in the NDI as well.

The CMG/Gerber Infinity is listed as being 4.8 times dimmer than the CMG/Gerber Infinity Ultra on Flashlight Reviews so it should definately fit the bill if you can find one.
I have a couple of the original CMG Infinities and they are certainly very low output-great for use in complete darkness. For outdoor use camping though I find I like to have a little more light available, maybe 5-10 lumens.I think the original Infinity is less than 3 lumens.
A low cost option might be a Photon Freedom.A red Photon Freedom will run a long time and if you need a white Photon Freedom you can lower output and extend battery life by using a single 2032 batt. in place of the two 2016 batteries. The Freedom will come on very low if you hold the switch and you can adjust the level to what you want from there.Even though coin cells aren't high capacity they should last quite a while for your intended use.

ask yourself: I want low output and what?

Because when all you need is low output, you can get, with that, a tiny light, or a super long runtime.

So do you need it to run forever, or would you rather have a light that you can't even tell is on you?

Those other options will determine what kind of light to get.

Shove a 5mm directly into the sockets of a MiniMag, and drill out the reflector. You will get several days of <1lm of light.
