:sssh:Hi everybody,

I was planing to buy a maxabeam and would maybe mod it in the future.

Are there any short arc xenon bulbs to replace without instaling coolers or changing sockets, etc? Has someone heard about the xenon short arc from Osram XBO 100 W OFR that produces 1900 lm vs 1000 lm of the XBO 75 W/2 OFR (both have the same specs and work at 13V). I guess that the late are similar to the ones used in the original maxa.

Are there any other brands besides Ushio? What do you think about the CERMAX 175w bulbs from perkins? (Though these definately can not be installed in a maxa beam)

Thanks

You would also have to modify the lamp driver electronics to give more power to the new bulb. I think changing the bulb alone won't produce any more lumens if they have the same arc gap and both are pure xenon bulbs. With a longer arc gap you could get more light but less throw.

EDIT: But anyways the Maxabeam is a highly recommended superlight if you want the ultimate throw, should be very impressive in stock condition.:)

ez78 is right,

If you don't rearrange the electronics, it has no use to mount a higher wattage bulb!

And: Osram bulbs are not suited for use with Maxabeam: All xenon short-arc bulbs have a 'belly button', the 'belly button' of the maxabeam bulb (and the UXL75 Ushio bulb) is placed well out of reach of the emittance-angle covered by the reflector.

The 'belly button' of the osram bulbs is much closer to the arc, and distorts a significant part of the light towards the reflector, causing a very distorted beampattern, with huge cp-loss !!

Osram bulbs are only suitable for use with more shallow reflectors, maxabeam reflectors are just too darn deep!

Best,

Ra.

thanks guys for your answers. I asume then that it is extremely dificult to upgrade a stock maxabeam.

Give them a call. They will talk to you. That way you will get real answers to your questions. Most of the time you will have to send it in to be modified. All it takes is money. They are very proud of their work but these lights (using the stock bulb) can be pushed quite a bit at the expense of run time. It's been several years since I have contacted them, but they were quite helpful. I have an older one, but by just upgrading the bulb to a newer one I could pick up 1-1.5 million CP.
The standard bulb runs at 75 watts on high, mine pushes 105 watts on high when I got it. The previous owner had Peak Beam Systems do some work on the light. I couldn't tell any difference because I had nothing to compare it to, like before and after. I should upgrade the bulb, but I have an extra bulb and wanted to use the bulbs up. The problem is I have never burnt up or out any bulbs.

PS I think I read somewhere these lights can easly handle 125-150 watts with no ill effects.
