14500 batteries at Radio Shack?

I'm looking to use a 14500 in my Jetbeam. I know NOTHING about batteries and have been reading more and more about the extra output of the 14500 battery. Everywhere I've read, they rate the battery at 3.7V. The Radio Shack 14500 is rated at 3.6V. Would the Radio Shack brand work? Or should I stay away from them completely? Thanks so much in advance guys!

Plenty of info on CPF and places to purchase. Use search function or Google-CPF only at top of every page. Do a search for AW and see his LiIon threads.

Welcome to CPF!

There is a great deal of information about batteries of all types in the 'Batteries' section. I'll move your thread there, where you will find the answers you are looking for.

Hello Sourcehill,

Welcome to CPF.

For all practical purposes, a Li-Ion cell that is labeled as 3.6 volts is exactly the same as one that is labeled as 3.7 volts. The cell from Radio Shack will work.

I don't know who makes Radio Shack Li-Ion cells, so there is a question as to how long they will continue to work, but they will work. A lot of people have used cells from CPF'er AW, so their performance is better understood.

I would have to agree with the rest on the AW's
Just spend a bit more (maybe less since radioshack is expensive as hell) and get the brand thats proven to be great.

Radioshack doesn't carry lithium ion AA batteries. They do however carry 3.6 volt lithium primaries for $15 each on their website. These are one time use lithium batteries. If you want rechargeables, stay away from these Radioshack batteries and buy decent ones online. AW makes good cells.

Just a word of advice: If you're referring to the MK IIx, I use the Ultrafire 3.6V unprotected cells. The Ultrafire protected 14500 cells don't work well in the MK IIx. Some of the modes don't work properly and it's just "flakey".

I have some AW 14500 cells on the way, which I've heard great things about, so I'm looking forward to trying those in the MK IIx.

ya know that light (acting that way) could be going into overdrive above the VF of the led , meaning it has a boost curcuit, and expects a 3.3V type of battery, not a fully charged 4.2V type of battery.
i dont KNOW about that exact model, but it would be very common for that to occur, REGUARDLESS of the stuff in the "sales" and advertising.

also , like fenix said, i dont know of any raw li-ion cells sold at rat shack, they might have some li-poly stuff for RC, like 11v type packs , so i would Suspect that it might be a primary, and surely wouldnt Charge it :) untill i know for sure.
they do have other "pack batteries" with li-ion in them, but no specialty li-ions yet.

THAT, is a computer backup battery, and is a low current 10 year type of primary cell, if its that , DONT CHARGE IT :) and you will waste it in a high powered light.

at the rat it says this, """"Rechargeable Yes"" <-- spec quotes, not correct

but i am almost positive a LS is a Primary, and would explode :poof: if recharged. Learn before you burn.

here specy sheet

--------------------------

the difference is usually in thier referances
LITHIUM - almost always refers to a Primary throwaway cell - recharge bad
li-ION - usually refers to some sort of rechargable
li-Fe and Li-Fe-Po refers to the newer safer rechargable li-ion technology with lower capacity.

---------------------------

there is a way to snag a li-ion "AA" sized battery from the RS, its in a RCR-v3 (SP) type of digital camera pack which has in it 2x shorter than AA li-ion rechargable cells. i forget the exact name of the pack, but that is how we aquired our first 2 AA li-ion rechargables, long before they were even sold. its not the LITHIUM one, its the rechargable li-ion one.

Interesting what I found at RS in the tech specs :
Chemistry Lithium
Capacity 2750 mAh
Voltage 3.6 Volts
Rechargeable Yes

Something does NOT add up here. The best I've seen a rechargeable 14500 rated capacity is around 1000 mah - they are showing a rating more like a primary or a NiMh AA. Yet they say it is rechargeable. Could it be 3 1/3 NiMH AA's in series and they are confused on chemistry or are they actually selling Li-Ions that are way over rated?
