EDIT 7/8: High mode runtime using AW protected 18650 added
EDIT 7/8: Outdoor beamshots added

Got this new thrower today. Here's my mini-review. :D

The spec copyed from the sales thread: Tiablo A8, LED Revolution – more focusing and light farther!!

1. Cree 7090 XR-E LED.
2. Step up and down constant current driver, with high efficiency dual mode DC-DC regulator (PWM / PFM) and circuit to protect Li-ion battery from over-discharging. Working voltage is 2.3V to 6V, under or over the circuit will cut off to protect battery and flashlight.
3. Two stage output:
i.High output: 1A at 210 Lumens for 2 hours
ii.Low output: 400mA at 60 Lumens for 8 hours
4. 42 mm diameter x 36 mm deep reflector provides greater efficient illumination over longer distances than the standard with similar power.
5. Support battery sizes Two 3.0V CR123A batteries or one 18650 Li-ion battery.
6. Type-III hard anodize high quality aerospace grade T7075 aluminum construction.
7. Water proof: waterproof to 5m/15ft.
8. Toughened ultra clear glass lens with AR coating
9. Tactical type switch: High/Low/Off button.
10. Weight: 150 g / less than 5.3 ounces excluding battery. Length: 155mm Head diameter: 45mm Housing Diameter: 25.4mm

Some photos at this moment. Runtime will be uploaded in a few days. :nana: (Please refer to the original thread for more photos and official runtime)

This light is similar to Lumapower MRV. I didn't by MRV yet, I just borrowed one from my friend. Since the MRV isn't mine, I'll not open it.

The two-stage switch is reverse clicky. First full click from OFF to Low mode. One more click will go to High mode. Once more will be OFF.

Tiablo A8 has plain bezel and sculptured bezel. Mine is plain. There's GITD o-ring at the lens:

Simple Apart. I don't know what's the coating on the threads.

Here's some beamshot. (MRV on left, A8 on right. I'll only take the smooth reflector's shots)

High mode (E.V. -1.5)

The hotspots are similar. The side spill is smaller than MRV.

Lux reading at 1M:
A8 Smooth reflector High: 16060, Low: 1660
A8 OP reflector High: 9670, Low: 890
MRV High: 13570, Low: 2560 (This MRV seems to be revised version?)

The Lumapower MRV and Tiablo A8 are really similar in construction and performance. I live in down town, facility lights everywhere. Sometimes it's not easy to find a dark and safe place to shine the light. :D I'll try to find a place to do outdoor shots in the future.

=====
EDIT on 7/8: My first try of outdoor shots at AM3:00. :ohgeez:

The surrounding lights is still bright and I think they're not good. The shutter speed is set to 10 second, F8.0 and auto white balance. The lights nearby are incans and maybe that's the problem makes the grass look brown? The distance to the tree is about 20m or more (I didn't step into them).

The hotspots aren't at the same point. The nearby grass is too bright and makes the side spill not easy to notice.

EDIT on 7/8: High mode runtime using AW protected 18650

I have no way to test my batteries' actual capacity, thus the runtime is just for reference. Please don't take it seriously. :D I don't have primary CR123A, runtime is only done with AW protected 18650.

The open voltage is about 4.17v when started. The regulation is flat as advertisement. The protection PCB shutdown at 96minutes. The current draw is about 1A @4.17v, 1.1A @4.04v (test separately).

Re: Tiablo A8 mini-review

Hello StefanFS,

I use AW protected 18650. Primary CR123A is too expensive here. :ohgeez:

A8 has low bettery warning (blinking?) but the AW protection pcb cut before the warning on the first test.

Re: Tiablo A8 mini-review

Then LumaPower has done some radical improvement on the driver in the MRV. It now produces almost 3500 Lux more in throw! I have a FluPic in my MRV and at maximum, which is 1200 mA to the led, I get 13500-13600 Lux with an 18650 cell from AW. With the old driver circuit in the MRV output with 18650 was ~10000 Lux and the led got ~800 mA. Or maybe the newer MRV and Tiablo have better binned leds, Q4 or Q5. I can't wait to get my Tiablo for a comparison. The Tiablo also seems to have an WG tint Cree whereas the MRV have WC tint.

Re: Tiablo A8 mini-review

Is it just me or the beam seems to be off center on the A8 :p

Re: Tiablo A8 mini-review

Thanks, NetKidz. Very interesting indeed. I'm impressed with the A8's Lux number on high.

My MRV is noticeably brighter on 2xRCR123As (vs. an 18650). Do you by any chance have RCR123As so as to get a Lux measurement on them in the MRV?

Thanks.

No. It's my problem. :nana: The lights to the wall is about 80cm and not parallel. I want to take all the side spill and step back furthur and that's the results.

My AW RCR123 aren't full charged at this moment. Will try it later.

Do you have the old or the newest version of the MRV?
The new driver circuit seems to be more efficient with 18650 cells. With the first version there was a big difference between 18650 and RCR123 in mA to the led. 800 mA versus 1190 mA. It now seems that the MRV drives the led at +1200 mA even on 18650. If the Lux measurements are correct the A8 seems to be (one of?) the most powerful production Cree flashlight today.

Re: Tiablo A8 mini-review (Outdoor shots added on 7/8)

Stefan,

I was on the pre-order list at batteryjunction, so I suppose I have the earliest version.

Forgive an elementary question, but if output in the newer version MRV on an 18650 roughly equals output on 2xRCR123As, what's the trade-off? Does the newer version get less runtime on an 18650?

Thanks.

Re: Tiablo A8 mini-review (Outdoor shots added on 7/8)

On Tiablo's website: http://www.tiablolight.com/A8.html under "*Remarks:" it says:
"1. When using two new CR123A batteries, use the flashlight at low output stage for three minutes before high output stage."
I'm guessing the regulator strictly won't handle anything above 6.0 volts, which I think would be annoying not only in terms of not being able to use 3.6v rechargeables, but having to run the light for 3 minutes before being safely able to use it.
Any comments on this aspect?

Regards,
Dave.

Tried with two AW protected RCR123. The open circuit voltage is 4.18v for both. Install in MRV and fire! WOW, yes, it's much brighter! High: 16700, Low: 8520

The low mode increased about 3 times. Also tried again with AW protected 18650, about 4.17v, the result is near previous tests.

The current draw from battery side at high mode: about 660mA for 2x RCR123 and about 830mA for 18650.

Re: Tiablo A8 mini-review (Outdoor shots added on 7/8)

Thanks for doing that, NetKidz. Good for the MRV on RCR123As. But, if the A8 runs for ~2 hrs. on an 18650, with flat regulation, putting out 16060 Lux, while the MRV runs ~25 minutes on 2xRCR123As, putting out 16700 Lux, I am even more impressed with the A8! Am I missing something here?

Yes, I tink so.

Just done the runtime of high mode using AW protected 18650. A8 runs about 96min with flat regulation.

@netkidz - thanks for adding the graphs. it looks like this is a winner and tiablo graphs are for real.

im definitely going to buy A8 now
