There is a possibility indeed to have a short. I already encountered such an event with my Wolf Eyes M90 Rattlesnake.
I saved some unprotected(!) 18650s from an old NP-1 battery. By cutting them loose, I cut the wrapping, but thought: "I can test them for now, I wanna see how bright this monster can be!"
So I put them in.... with these Wolf Eyes lights, the body is connected to the POSITIVE pole of the outward battery, and this is, where it went wrong. After switching it on, it was soooo dim, I didn't trust it. Well, it was running from only ONE battery as the other got shorted!! In this case, I quickly realized it, the battery was quite warm already! I don't wanna know what could have happened if I had decided to put the lamp aside.....
Bottom lime: BE CAREFUL in this!! Don't trust on a single, ordinary piece of Scotch tape to insulate the cells... try to find something better! Serious accidents and/or venting with flames may occur from a short on these cells, putting everything surrounding the cells afire INSTANTLY!!
Even if it may be a pity, you'd better get rid of these damaged cells, and buy some new ones. You won't buy a new home for $12,- not even for $24,-
