1x XM-L or 4x XR-E ?

I know that the XR-E can be focused more easily than the XM-L, but given that we have such bright single die LEDs these days, is there much point building high output lights using multiple LEDs any more? When an XM-L can put out in the area of 900 lumens, is there much point using an array of smaller LEDs any more?
