Well, It is probably a lot more than 20 watts, maybe 30? I have wanted to do this for a while. I used a 6D cell mag and 4 V3UW HD's. It is direct drive. I figured that the 4 LS's would be ok becasuse of the internal resistance of the D's. How much current can they really produce? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/huh.gif The heatsink was made with sheets of aluminum and artic alumina. I had to use the NX-05 optics because there is really no other chioce (I don't have any LP fraens yet). So, the beam is kinda a flood but with this much light who really cares. The head gets pretty warm and so does the first part of the body. I artic alumina'd the head to the body for a larger heat sink. This baby can light up a whole yard not just some little part of it. I was very impressed. The only problem is that now I am spoiled. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

GEEEEEZ.. I guess 5 - 5Wers is next huh?

When ever I have the money (which will be a while) I am going to do 3 - 5Wers in a triple frean... that is, unless they come out with a quad fraen by that time. hehe.

Maybe it's 40?

Kick Ars light there, Blue Shift. I'd like to here what that dude from Hawaii says about it.

A tree shot would be great.

ahhh haha. Just when flash's 3x5w mod came out. Where will the madness end?!?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That dude from Hawaii gives it a big thumbs up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

... but will those D-cells be able to deliver this huge amount of power or is it underdriven in reality?

Hmm, you CAN actually put 4 NXo5 inside the mag head! dang it. Cool mod /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

you said something about using the aluminum sheets as the heatsink. Do you mean the aluminum foil or something else? Because according to my exp, the aluminum foil does NOT transfer the heat.
Hmm, one 5W needs at least 700 mAH. So 4 of them need 2800 mAH. I think the D cells capable of delivering that high current. But the resistance from the individual cell probably start to take over by then.

Aluminium foil transfers heat very well, but it has very little thermal mass, so using it as a heatsink is an exercise in futility. What you want in a heatsink is something that has both good conductivity, and substantial thermal mass. Sheet aluminum is likely to have reasonable thermal mass, as well as good conductivity.

A D cell NiCd (a real one, 4000-4500 mAh) will have not trouble at all deliverying about about 6000Ma. If you use a D size NiMh, it will deliver about 6000Ma for about 2 hours.

ahh, thanks for the explanation, mattheww.
I never thought that the foils can actually transfer heat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ditto on this! Good mod J /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Thanks guys! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I did used sheets of aluminum. I think they are 1/32nd. I used several sheets with artic alumina to make it thicker. The D cells are putting out about 3.5amps. I am using some E2. But regular duracell are not much dimmer. I will try to get some beam shots.
