I asked a couple days ago about easy 2c mod mag options. I have decided to go with the 5d route for simplicity.

I have my 2c Mag ready with 3 li-123 batteries on stand-by with a 5d standard Mag bulb put inside. I have the heater padding to hold the batteries, and just a few hours ago, adjusted the spring to fit with the smaller batteries. So far so good. I guess this will put me in the lumen neighborhood of 164 if the Mag website is correct (and if I remember the figure correctly).

It's the simplest modification enabling me to use the throw of the light without having to buy new reflectors and rebuild anything. I WOULD have it fired up right now, but the damn batteries were old and no good. Gonna get new ones.

Well, doing this put me on the flashaholic's path once again in going through the electronics drawer and pulling out a couple of other lights, my two 2d Mags and my bulb-less 3d mags that I plan to modify as well.

My questions are...

1) What is the simplest and easiest solution to mod these mags to somewhere in the 300 lumen range? Of unparalled importance is that no modification takes away the ability of the mag to maximize its natural throw!

2) Is it possible to mod my 2ds the same way I did the 2c, but WITHOUT using 123s? How about AAs?

3) If I do use 4 123s with a 2d, what kind of bulb would be needed, and would that be ALL I needed?

Yes. 6 Eneloop or regular NiMH AAs in 2 3AA/D adapters pushing an overdriven Pelican 3854-Lo bulb. You can get away with the stock lens and reflector if you use it for no more than maybe 5 minutes at a time. Research the ROP-Low mod.

It's tough to keep 300 lumens going for long with CR123s, but if that's what you want, Pelican will have a 9.6v PR base bulb to do the job; just can't remember which one.

My favorite basic mod for the 3D Mag is to use the MagCharger 6 volt battery pack with an over-driven 4 cell Mag Krypton bulb for a nice white light with 2 hours and 20 minutes runtime. Output will be a little less than your 2C set-up. Of course you'll need a charger. For output closer to the 300 lumens you're looking for, you could use the same 3854-Low bulb from above, but this time driven at spec. Or you could use the 3854-High bulb that comes in the 2 pack, but this is definitely going to melt your stock lens and reflector.

Joe,

2D M@G; sleeve it w/ 1" PVC and cut down tail spring for a 3C supply. 3C NiMH or 3C LiIon get you plenty of current to drive ROP incans.

Add a 2nd sleeve 3/4" PVC inside the 1" PVC and you can run 2X 18650. Good luck w/ your mod.

I once ran 7xAA Alkalines in my 2D mag using an 8-AA adapter. I used a cheap RadioShack bulb, can't remember the number offhand. 8 Alkalines fit pretty easily in a 2D, if you can find a way to buy the batteries cheap. You can fit 8 NiMH's in there if you try different brands of batteries and find some that fit. Lots of brands of NiMH's don't fit.
