I have a couple torches that are set up to run 3-4 primaries or 2 lithium rechargeable. I like the idea of running a 2 17500 or even 18650 as it will significantly lengthen the run time but these will see use in a high reliability application along with frequently potential sudden impacts. I know 2xCR123 set ups have tolerated this for many years so I'm going to assume running 3 won't be an issue. Not sure why 4 would be problematic either.

Other than the usual concerns running li-ion in series any concerns running a 2s configuration using high quality cells?

I agree about paralleling, since you can just buy a larger mAh capacity.

But if you need a certain minimum voltage, there is no choice but to use multiple cells in series.

Yeah I really try to avoid in series batteries especially after I had lithium batteries blow up in a flashlight that was in my hand at the time. Thank God I was outside at the time and the smoke and smell was terrible as I remember, and it was in a very robust light and most of the energy blew out of the tail cap. The light slept on the lawn that night.
