Yes, I read the directions, and followed them exactly as written.

I also fully removed the head before attempting the install.

I can install the brass nut first, and then the black piece on top.

Is this acceptable?

The brass part does indeed screw onto the switch tower, but only first.

Then I can install the black piece after.

This seems backwards from the photos and directions.
 
Purpose of brass part is to provide negative contact to LED modile and in mean time hold the black positive contact in place. So black part goes into switch tower first and then secured with brass nut.

That is as I suspected.

Mine, however, does not function in that manner.

However, since the purpose of each piece is to provide an electrical path,
my guess is that the order doesn't matter as long as each piece is snug, correct...?

Do you have to buy a separate switch for the 8.4 volt to work in 3 modes? What kind of run time should I expect from the 8.4 with a 6c mag using NiMh?

You don't need to change or modify the stock switch. It will work with single, 3 and 5 mode modules.

Depending on your batteries, you will get up to 5 hours of total run time.
