I have a 2D mag light that I think I am going to get an everled for. I also happen to have ALOT of AA NiMh batteries. I've seen little bits here and there about homemade adapters for 4AA > D adapters...anybody want to share your thoughts on making one of these before I go off to the garage? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You'd have to wire them in parallel for 4.8V. I think 8 cells in series would put you over the voltage for the everled. I thought it was 9V max, but you might want to check as I could be mistaken.
Also, I can't even fit 4 AA's in my mag D tube. You'd probably have to modify the flashlight to get them to fit.
Personally, I am going to wait for Elektro Lumens 3-to-D's to show up and run 6 AA's in series for 7.2V nominal. I'll also have the option of running a 5 cell magnum star bulb if I so choose.

No...I mean 8 batteries total, 2 sets of 4 stacked on top of each other, for 2.4 volts. You must have a C mag if you can't fit 4 AA's side by side, as they fit just fine in mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Also I saw a picture of an adapter someone made a little while ago that had 4 side by side for a D mag...although I can't seem to find it again.

No, I don't have a C mag. It is a MAG 2D. I know this because I can fit two D batteries in it.
But of all the AA batteries I've tried I've never been able to fit 4 of them side by side.

With all due respect, I am doing nothing wrong. There is only one way to arrange 4 AA batteries inside a mag tube. And it doesn't work in mine. I can get three no problem. But I would have to pound the 4th one in with a hammer, which I have been unwilling to attempt.
I have seen that link before. And 4AA's fit nicely into his flashlight. But they don't fit nicely into mine.
I guess I am just blessed with a MAG from the lower limit of the manufacturing tolerance.

I've tried duracells, energizers, two different types of radioshack NiMH's, Energizer NiMH's, and some of the duracell NiMH's I bought from MCM.

When I was working on my 6AA-2D adapter late last yeaar I tried a
n 8AA-2D mockup. No joy.. It only fit in about half the D size flashlights I tried and definately NOT into my 2D Mags. Some comments I received later claim the older 2D Mags are larger than the newer ones and the 3D, 4D and 5D ones have different IDs depending on when they were made. As for the baterries the OD tolerance between various manufacturers is close to a millimeter.

Hmm...both of the mags I have fit 4AAs actually, one is only a few months old and the other about a year and a half...

My 2D mag might be 8 years at this point. I don't remember when exactly I bought it, but it was a while ago. It is new enough to have the new style switch that is removable with a hex wrench, not the older one that you need the custom wrench for.

I got out the mockup of the 8AA-2D adapter I made before Christmas and measured various AA batteries in it. Avg = 34.15MM, largest set 34.33mm.
Average ID of the Mags I have handy 34.30 mm smallest = 34.25.
Average size of the Ds on hand= 33.70, largest 33.97.

1. Not all of the AAs I have will fit in all the Mags I have.
2. All of the Ds I have will fit in all of the Mags I have.

Nah, it doesn't bother me. If I really wanted to fit 8 AA's into my mag, the inside diameter of the tube wouldn't stop me. There are ways of fixing that...

The mag I used in my mod was brand new from Wally world, and uses the hex key to get the switch out. Not the older type. I can imagine there may be some batteries out there that won't fit inside of it. If you look at the dimensions provided by the battery companies, you'll find that the normal size for a AA is 14.5 mm (.571 in). However, of all the batteries I had on hand that I measured (at least four different brands), none of them were this large, and as I recall they were all about 14mm (.551 in) or less. This makes the 4 cells put together only 1.330 inches in diameter. I don't have all the measurements I took in front of me right now (I'm at work), but I'll post them as soon as I can.
