Hi guys,

Other than the shorter bulb life. What else can I expect if I put a 5-cell Mag bulb in a 6-cell Mag?

Brighter?
Whiter light?
Hotter?

Has anyone here tested the lumen output of a 5-cell bulb in a 6-cell Mag?

I see the official specs here:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=177628

But has anyone here actually empirically/practically tested the bulb output?

Thanks for any tips and leads.

I think the normal bulbs should work, the Xenon ones will instaflash. You should expect all three. Brighter, whiter and hotter.

Output I don't know but I'd presume around 250-300 lumen.

I did some testing with some stock Mag bulbs to see how much more voltage they could take and posted about it here:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=184874

But I didn't have any 5 cell bulbs to test. Based on the bulbs I did have, I think its safe to assume that the 5 cell could be overdriven safely by 1.5V without any problems and would be brighter/whiter/hotter.

In fact, my lux readings almost doubled for all of the stock Mag bulbs when you added another 1.5V to the rated bulb voltage.

unfortunately the krypton ones blacken real fast...
so lux readings I presume are initial outputs.

its a pretty good starting point for hotwires but don't expect them to be long life:D

if i had a 6D mag and was wanting to upgrade the bulb it wouldnt be to a maglite one. have you considered the bipin bulb holders that keep the cam mechanism? -i know its not for everyone but just making sure you know its available and its potential.

Hello,

I have always used 5 cell lamps in my 6C maglight because of the lower voltage with rechargeables: 6 x 1,2 = 7,2 which equals 5 x 1,5 = 7,5 pretty close. It works well with me, though the higher output lamps (krypton white stars ?) do not last for very long. But standard cells hold up quite well.:twothumbs

Lumen output? No idea... Between 100 and 150 ?? (does someone have a clue?)

Kind regards,
Joris

It works fine. You'll be happy. I have done that to mine for years.
