5 Watt Luxeon SE Reflector Nirvana 17,500 Lux !
Here's another mod for the Chicago Electric Power Tools spot light (available at Harbor Freight $9.95 when on sale, $14.95 regular price).
The 6V 5 Amp Hour Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) battery had died, so this light was screaming to get "fixed" and returned to service. I started by powering up a 3W HD Luxeon and positioning it in the reflector to get an idea of the focal point. The reflector is so deep that a lot of the light from the High Dome (HD) Luxeon didn't even hit the reflector. First clue - the spot was about three times brighter if I pointed the HD toward the reflector. So I dug in the parts cabinet and found a white 5 Watt Side Emitter (SE). Next was just a bit of eyeball measuring and dumb luck when I cut the heatsink post.
The distance (0.549 inch) was perfect for a very tightly focused beam from the Luxeon SE. The diameter (0.622) just fits through the reflector opening with a tight mechanical fit. I started with 5/8 bar stock (0.625) and just turned 0.003 off the diameter, and drilled two holes length wise for the power wires. A little Artic Silver thermal epoxy around the heatsink where it flares to 0.625 and pushed it in place from the back of the reflector.
Kick @ss tight beam that hurts your eyes if pointed at a white wall.
The beam measures 17,500 Lux at one meter when powered from 6 NiMh AA cells.
A piece of bubble wrap goes on top of the 6AA battery holder and then the door slid in place for a very light, bright spot light. Plenty of room in the battery compartment for many different batteries if you want more than the 60 - 90 minutes run time these 6 AA cells provide.
So this reflector seems to be a great match for Luxeon Side Emitter LEDs. Simple easy mod that resulted in a great little spot light that has really white light that can reach out into the night. The SE Luxeon in this reflector makes a perfect round spot with no hint of the dreaded black hole in the center. The center of the beam is the brightest part; no more 5W Black Holes.
This quick mod turned out to be the brightest Luxeon mod I've ever made. 17,500 Lux from a Side Emitter no less. The SE Luxeons always seemed like a misfit before, but not anymore. It just takes the right reflector to get the most out of them.
