I am considering doing the ROP mod on my 6 cell MAg. Before I purchase the parts for the mod, I was wondering if there are other lights out there that compare to the brightness and throw of the ROP for around the same cost as the mod?

Thanks!

Depends how much is same cost and what configuration/parts you considering.
People use very different size, form factor and quality parts here.

Thanks for your reply. I was planning on going with 6 NiCad D cells, new reflector, glass lens, and ROP high bulb. Are there any other lights that compare with the brightness and throw of the ROP high in the $30.00 - $40.00 range?

Is there any reason that you would be using NiCad cells instead of NiMH?

I would go with NIMH cells of something like 9000-10,000 mAh batteries being as cheap as they are. NiCads seem to be finicky without a good conditioning charger to keep them happy.

No real reason. I just thought that NiCd cells had a slower self discharge rate compared to NiMh cells. I know both are similar. I am not overly concerned with the run time. If I can get 30 to 45 minutes, I would be happy. I would rather a low self discharge cell, so if the flashlight sits a while, I can still be confident that it has some decent run time left.

That is what I though as well. Back to my original question; are there any lights that compare to the brightness and throw of the Mag ROP mod for $30.00 - $40.00?

Thanks!

With that buget in mind, you could also consider a 3 Cree XR-E module or 5 Cree XR-E module and not need to replace the stock Mag lens with a UCL or borofloat.
You would need to apply a bit of elbow grease to either of these modules in order for them to fit a Mag D head.

Regarding your original question, there are a few $30-$40 incans available from Pacific Rim e-tailers that would fall between the ROP HI and LOW bulbs in output but they use rechargeable 18650 sized Li-ion batteries.
