A couple new PR based heads...

Hi guys,

Since these heads aren't really mods or custom and since some of them are headed to Wayne to be made available on the Shoppe as DIY components after they are anodized, I thought this would be the proper place to post them. Both are based on the PR reflector primarily.

One part is a trimmed down or turbo version of the McLux-PR head, the PR-T, for need of a name:

I think the applications for this are relatively straight forward.


The other part is a PR-Can. This head is viable for portable lighting applications but is also intended for transportation and fixed lighting applications. It is designed to receive a Luxeon 1W star and PR reflector by default. It can also host a down boy driver or other PCB that would fit in a .560" diameter by .750" deep cavity behind the star. Certainly other optics can be adapted as well as a bead blasted PR reflector. The driver can be remotely located as in the case of George's cool drivers. Other LED's can be hosted with appropriate adapters or heat sinks. The back end is tapped for 1/8" NPS pipe thread so the head can be attached to a Loc-Line stalk or standard electrical lamp fixture components using 1/8" male threads.

A final note on anodizing: the PR-T's are headed to two anodizing firms. One will do a batch in Black HA and the other will do HA natural. Until these parts are returned and functional in application and fit, this post is a bit premature. At least the eggs aren't all in one basket. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I like the PR-T. And Natural HA? YES! very nice.

Not a big fan of the second one there though, but thats cuz i dont like egg shaped, rounded lights.

But, all in all, excellent job.

Thanks guys! I'm anxious to get my hands on some of these myself! I went to the SF website to see if they still had some E1's and E2's on sale but the site says they are sold out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Oh well. I suspect some of the dealers still have some.

I should point out that the these new PR heads have been revised to require a single O-ring between the lens (window) and the lip of the head. When the bezel cap is tightened down all the way, the O-ring is compressed and seals the front end. There is no longer a gap between the cap and the shoulder of the head. The latest batch of black McLux-PR heads that are now on the shoppe were all machned by me prior to anodizing so that they too function in the single O-ring seal.

Because the thread pitch is so fine on the bezel cap, I strongly recommend a little grease, especially on the raw Al heads. The raw Al can gall rather quickly if there is anything in the thread to cause interference. Some of you may have encountered this problem on the Pelican M6 bodies due to their fine pitch threads and raw Al.

I have not had the pleasure of using any of CNC Dan's parts but in quick view, it did not appear that he stayed with the "E" series thread mating and geometry.

It could be a couple weeks before Wayne has these on his shoppe. It depends on how long the anodizers take and then I need to get the heads "kitted" and to Wayne.

The combo you have aske to see would likely look better (and it does need some help!) when a black PR-T could be shown on the body but here it is anyway:

I think the custom head I made for the body brakes up the blocky lines for a nicer look but I do admit that the size and feel of the PR-T on the Uni-123 body does work well from a functional standpoint. Certainly function has dictated the form for this package.

Someone started a thread somewhere on this pak. It's a one off at present and likely into the future. Here it is with its current one off head as well:

So this is basically a lightened PR head? Without the extra mass and fins, what do you think the thermal limits are as compared to the old design?
