Here's a pic of it resting in its case. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif More pics to come, hopefully some beamshots soon.

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

It looks fairly impressive, but actually knowing what rests in that case... its VERY impressive /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif I want one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

I'm going to try to take some beamshots now. I hope the camera battery holds out long enough, its indicator is blinking red now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

Sorry for the delay guys, my battery died and I had to recharge it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Here's some shots of the laser in action. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif My camera blows at taking beam shots so the second pic doesn't look anything like what it really looks like. All I did was turn off the flash, I don't know how to do the exposure settings. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif No outside shots tonight, it's cold and rainy and I don't want to mess up my laser. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif Lasernerd, do you mean what they are meant to be used for or what I'm gonna use it for? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Heavenly sweet rewards! This is amazing! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
Don't set your house on fire man!

LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hahaha.gif
Wow!

Brilliant shots!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif

It looks like a lighter green than the leadlights.

Don't shine it on anything black!!!

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

Wow i've never seen a laser light up an area like that, and never one with such a visible laser....that thing looks like it should be illegal =X Don't go shining any airplanes with that thing! Freaking out your neighbors through their windows is ok though =)

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

Dude! i hope thay aren't your dolls.............

Damn that thing lights up!

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

LOl no they're not mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif But it does look impresive how it lights up the room. In the third shot it actually burnt the dark wood table it was aimed at. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/faint.gif

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

mmm, yeah. Now who wants to be first to take one of these things apart and start modding the driver board for more current? I know for a fact that 300mW is doable, since I'm getting that out of one of the old-style PGL-III lasers here. The old ones have an unregulated driver board. I am running it off of a Pila 168A rechargeable LiIon battery that comes off the charger at 4.2V, and I'm getting about 305mW. Yes, 305mW from a handheld laser, and now it's rechargeable too. It's wild. Keep in mind that this is the OLD style PGL-III. The new ones with the blue power button have regulated driver boards, so this won't work. But it should be possible to get 300mW+ out of the new style PGL-III as well, if someone dares to disassemble it and modify the driver board to provide more current. Anyone willing to risk destroying a $600+ laser for the possibility of even MORE power?

Before anyone asks, no, I don't have any of the old-style PGL-III lasers here, and no, I can't get more. But if someone has one of the old ones with the 0-9 adjustable power switch, they might want pick up a Pila 168A battery and make an adapter. Swinging 300mW around a dark sky is amazing.

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

Shiftlock, the only mod you made to get 300+ is to rig the Pila into the battery compartment? So just the additional voltage does the trick? Do you notice much additional heat from the fins and what is your best guess about life of the laser given the boost?

Can you post a pic of your battery holder mod?

Can't partake in your next PGL-III buy - to much $$ outlay for Christmas. Sure would like two, though. Maybe down the road a bit if you're still buying them.

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

Yes, just the extra voltage is what gave me this output. There's no noticable additional heat, except in the end cap, which is where the driver board is located. That gets slightly warm. No idea how this affects the life of the laser, but the beam appears to be of good quality, so I think it's safe. I'll post pics when I get a chance. There are pics elsewhere of people who have used the Pila batteries in c-cell flashlights. What I did was take a piece of round wooden dowel slightly smaller in diameter than a C battery, cover it in aluminum foul, and then wrap all but the ends in tape. That took care of the length. Then I took a 2 inch piece of garden hose and split it down the middle, and wrapped it over the Pila battery. That took care of the battery diameter. It worked great. As the battery voltage drops, the output of the laser dips down to 3.7V, which is where it stay for most of its operating time before needing a charge, the output of the laser drops down to about 270mW. Still stunning.

I want to repeat again that this will not work with the newer PGL-III lasers, since they have regulated driver boards that unfortunately trim the voltage back to what it's supposed to be.

Re: A pic of my new PGL-III

I can't beleive you are trying to mod these things.

Hmmm, for $500 I think I may leave mine alone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif (when I get it that is - now's the time to do it though when I've had a few).

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif 300mw, I think a black piece of paper may well start to burn at this power!!!
