Ah crap. Got laid off today

So I walk through the front door of work today and my boss is sitting waiting for me . He pulls me aside and tells me he has to let me go for now until work picks up. This I was not expecting because I "thought" we had made it through the slow time. The weather is getting nicer and that means more work as well but I guess I was wrong.
I don't know about anybody else but I can't stand starting a new job, reminds me of moving from school to school. It's a good thing I have been putting money away for Saablusters D.E.F.T. May have to use it to help pay for rent. :mecry:

Sorry to hear of the bad news.

There are a few positives: forces you to reassess your goals, provides the opportunity to re-train/change career paths, gives you time to do things that you've been putting off, and it's a chance to return to your grass roots.

I hope you can keep sight of the glass "half-full", but you're entitled to feel sad-angry-worried-lost for at least a little while. Just don't let it keep you down too long.

I know the feeling as last Monday I started work for just over a hour with another guy at a jobsite and things were already slow, then we get a call that I should drop by the office *I think well I guess I will be going to another site then as most others remaining were already then...* but while I knew it was often the slowest time period for them (despite weather warming up) and it was made even worse this time due to one person who is involved with with bringing in a lot of work, to be going back in for corrective amputation surgery on left leg (lost most of it due to a 2-story fall from wall ladder some years ago) and then recovery away from work. So now I am stuck with what could be essentially part-time hours until say May as I am least senior (in time there, not age) or look for another job. :sigh:

While two were technically laid off same day (also one was fired a couple days earlier due to not calling for three absents) I was not, however work may be sparse enough to seem like a layoff.

My firm is not doing that great either. We had a round of laid off already and some people were forced to work part time (3 days a week) and take 60% of their paychecks.

As they say, every cloud has its silver lining. Who knows, you may end up getting a better job :shrug:. Most people stay in the same job for long duration because they get very comfortable with the people they work with. That's a very good thing, but it makes you more reluctant to leave even if there are better opportunities elsewhere. Just a thought.

I've been trying to break in to the Network Engineering field, but every place seems to want 5 or more years experience.
Even the places that specifically say "Entry Level" still seem to require at least 2-3 years experience.. :thinking:

The places that typically offer me project-work or service-call type of work seemed to have not called me lately, either.

Times are tough..

Sorry to hear that. Keep your chin up...who knows, you might get a better job. I was laid off last year and ended up getting a MUCH better job...hope the same happens for you.

Hey, at least you don't live around Detroit. The local economy is getting so bad that people are leaving in droves and those of us that are left are getting ready for a scenario straight out of a Mad Max movie.

It's rough all around.

I am getting hit with a 5% salary cut starting in May.
My wife has no idea if she'll have a job next month as her employer is having a really rough time and may go under at any moment.

All we can do is hope this mess resolves itself fairly soon and things start looking up again.

I am thinking of taking this time I have and go back to school for a "small business" course at a college. I have wanted to open my own powder coating shop for a while but just don't know how to open it or run a business.
I have enough money for 2 months and by the time I fill out EI papers and get approved it will take the government 6 weeks to give me my first cheque.
Even then it's only half of what I made. All the jobs left in this city are low paying jobs unless you went to school for a specific job but a low paying job is better then nothing for the time being. As an up side to all this.... I get to sleep in.... I'll say it again this time with gospel music in the background...
I get to sleep in. I love sleeping in, no more 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night.
My sympathy to all those out there that are going through these harsh times, especially the parents with little ones running around.

YES! That's the way to look at it!
As a matter of fact, that is what paid for me to go to school - Workforce Development.. After working at a grocery store for 13 years until they went out of business. Workforce Development paid for me to go to school.. But only certain 'careers' were acceptable for the program. For me, at the time, I chose 'Network Specialist'. I'm guessing they might have such a program in Canada.. Dunno..

Time to look for something new!

I hope things go well for you. I have been let go twice in the last year and was seasonal for 5 years before that. So this is the seventh winter I have been unemployed in a row. The job situation is very difficult right now, good luck on your search. :shrug:

Aw man, that sucks.
I work for myself, so when the building industry is shite my income suffers.
So I decided a while back to buy and sell stuff on eBay in my spare time. It helps 'cos people always go there looking to buy stuff cheaper than in the shops, or because they can't buy what they want from the highstreet. Between eBay and PayPal you can bank on losing about 20% of your sale price. And it's always easier to sell something expensive to someone with a lot of money, than it is to sell something cheap to someone without much money.

I'll be in that same boat in 2 weeks, if the set of interviews I'm in with one company doesn't pan out. My entire R&D site is shutting down.

Regardless, I'll be jumping off the sinking (and increasingly expensive) S.S. California soon.

My thoughts are with you. I see a lot of layoffs around here. Closings too. I'm glad that I'm part time security now. The worse it gets here, the more security jobs come open. Not good pay, but it's work. The place I'm at, even if they close down (sometime this year it looks like), the inventory stays for at least a year more and has to be guarded.

I hate to watch it all. My wife & I are in poor shape, but I sure wouldn't want to be young with a family to support right now.

Tough it out & keep on keepin on..........
