I have two old ones replaced with Arc AAA's awhile back. They sit in the drawer, and I am wondering if there's anything simple to do with them to get an led installed.

You could use a 3mm white led with a 12v car alarm battery (P/N: MN21/23). Use an additional spring to compensate for the difference in the new battery & the original AAA. Works nicely, but the battery only lasts about 1 - 1 1/2 hours. See this link: http://flashlightreviews.home.att.net/mods/solitaire.htm

Or, you could build a small Satcure circut (with a very small coil) and install it in the head of the Solitare after removing the reflector. A 5mm LED works better for this mod. Benefit here is that you use the originally specified AAA battery, but not as bright as 1st option or the Arc. See this link: http://flashlightreviews.home.att.net/mods/yc_stepup_sol.htm

Neither is quite as nice as an ARC, but since they are just sitting in the drawer not being used, why not?

Funny you should ask. I have twenty pounds of components but a shortage of donors. Would you be willing to sell one of the solitaires to me? Oh yes, the satcure circuit with a transistor from a disposable camera (as suggested by Steven Novotill) works better on one cell than on two- it overheats. Good match for this application.

Ferrous,
You mention a shortage of donor solitares......can you not find them where you are? Home Depot has TONS of them..various colors for $4.95.

If I misunderstood you, I apologize.
