is my understanding correct that an aspherical lens combined with a reflector is the best combo to achieve ultimate throw, is that possible with the Apex?

A reflector with an aspheric is a horrible combo. Yes more light gets out of the flashlight with the reflector but it does not collimate and therefore does not add to the throw. It will give you a VERY nasty beam. So just pick one or the other.

jimjones3630 has a Mag61 with aspheric AND reflector up for sale on B/S/T right now.

Don't ask me how it works, but from the beamshots it seems to work pretty darned well, even though it would appear to be contrary to the laws of physics lol.

That lens looks to have a very long focal length. I believe the filament is nearer to the lens than the fp.

In any case, an aspheric lens is more effective at getting light downrange.

That's really strange, I never thought to use the lens without the reflector. I just finished four aspherical lights the other nite and thought they were all perfect. One was not originally built to have the lens so the head didn't screw all the way down so I took out the reflector and compared. It really does have an amazingly clean square spot now. I never hated the round halo that the reflector gives, but I would have sworn it helped get the light going forward. Without the reflector it's just as bright and I just tested both still throw waaaay out there equally but the no-reflector one is JUST the square beam, no flooding surrounding light at all. I like it. :) Thanks for the idea.
