checked 1 week ago to see what to get for a flashlight and i find the tecnology has gone up like crazy . the kind of light and performance you can get with just 2 aa batteries is unreal to me . so anyway i decided on a $60 or so price range . decent spill is a must and with all the reading i have done have decided to buy one with cree q5 led . fenix i believe is the name brand . well it takes cr123a batteries .
that is my delema . i like using only rechargeable batteries and if i have read right the mah is the storage size . rechargeable cr123a have at max 900 mah where as non rechargeable around 1600 mah max . now does that mean i am only going to get round half the run time ? and if so may have to search for one that uses 2 aa batteries .
any help would be appreciated , completely new to all this as of one week ago .

man and i swear i looked through the forums and didnt see the one includeing batteries ... thank you for the heads up . checked the forums again and spotted it . new to the forums as you can see
looking round to see if there is an option to move the thread to the correct forum . dont see any ?

Fenix also makes some lights that use 1AA or 2AA that are close in performance to the 123 batteries - can't remember off hand the fine print - but I have 2 L2D's that use 2AA batteries and have been quite happy with them - they are the older Cree version but works fine for me and they get a WOW WHAT THE HECK reaction when others see them ( same reaction with my Streamlights & Malkoff drop in )

The L2D Premium Edition is now available with either a Cree Q5 or a Luxeon Rebel 100. It runs on 2 AA batteries.

The L2D with the Q5 is at the upper left.

If you are going to go with the P3D (2xCR123), you can indeed run it on rechargeable 123-sized lithium-ion cells. Bear in mind that: 1) you should definitely use protected lithium-ion cells, and 2) some people are uncomfortable with using two lithium-ion cells together (protected or unprotected cells). A good solution may be to use the LiFePO4 batteries, which are supposed to pretty much eliminate the "vent with flame" possibility. In fact, CPFers think rather highly of AW's batteries, which are now sold by Fenix-store.com.

You will indeed get less runtime with rechargeables than you will with primary (non-rechargeable) cells. But you will likely use the flashlight even more!

this same topic just came up in another thread regarding the "lost" capacity when you go to rechargables in the CR123 format. Li-Ion in that small of a format just doesn't have room for a lot of capacity when you figure in the thicker can for a re-usable cell, the protection circuit, etc....

I'll say the same thing I said in that other thread... If you are looking for a 2xCR123 size light, and want to use rechargeable li-ion, you need to get a light that supports a single 18650 sized li-ion rechargeable cell, the P3D is not the light for that.

This is the best alternative to the P3D IMO:

it supports a wider range of inputs, from a single 18650, to 2xCR123, to 2xRCR123.

That's pretty funny, because when I was new here I posted in general flashlight disscussion about which 123 rechargeables to get. Well, it was moved swiftly and Im surprised that this has not been locked or moved yet. Well welcome to CPF.
