Hello, today I was going through some old stuff of mine and I found an old lighter which I found years an years ago while playign with a friends metal detector...I foudn it when I was a kid and kept it ever since in my collection...It is a Berkeley windproof lighter...I looked up the company years ago and found out that they were in direct compition with Zippo lighters in the 40's and 50's...I only have the insert now not the case, but I was lookign at it and I read the back and it has on it "Flashlight compnay of America...Jersey city, NJ...made in USA) So I got to thinking, was Berkeley a flashlight company in the 1940's and 50's? Does anyone have a Berkeley flashlight? I was just curious about it and I was wonderign if anyone has more information about this company...I never thought anythgin of it before, but now that I am a flashaholic, lol, it interests me...So any additional info would be great...:grin2:

I am a hardcore Zippo fan, but I ike the design on the insert, having everythgin closed up so less fuel can escape...plus a nice hidden screw encloses a spare flint under the gas cap, another nice feature I wish Zippo used...

Here are some pics...

Yeah, lol, I try not to stray away from my favorite all american brand...I own almost every book made in the US about Zippos...here is an interesting fact for you, did you know that 25% of zippo owners are collectors...So 1 out of every 4 people who owns a zippo lighter collects them too...:grin2:

Not to chnage the subject but here is a new Zippo I just got...Looks like a plain old black matte, but this one is special...this is a canadian zippo, something I was looking to get for a logn time, but I never found a design I liked, and they were usually very expensive...For those of you who do not know what Im talking about, Zippo had a factory in Canada but it closed down in 2001, so these zippos that were made in Niagra falls, Ontario are collectors items now, and a favorite for zippo collectors around the world...Since I found one that I like, simple black matte finish ( alot of the canadian zippos left and being sold feature niagra falls designs on the front and were sold at niagra falls at the gift shops) Besides the niagra falls designs, the only other canadian zippos I saw had either hockey team logos on them or the leaf design, but when I saw this plain one I jumped on it...

This one was made in October 1996...I know that because of the marks on the bottom stamp...If you own a zippo you cna ask me here when it was made or use the guide which can be foudn at my free website which I have a link for in my signature...

I own three Zippos...

And I don't smoke.

I don't smoke either, lol...I ahve about 50 now, new and used...but I LOVE my ziplight insert now that I am a flashaholic...this was an item that Zippo discontinued a long time ago...I had it upgraded with a red 5mm LED...here are some pcis of it in my modified EDC zippo which is a 1937 replica made in 2000, it is more squared like the models made in 1937...I then attached that emblem on the front of it to further personalize it...

Here is a comparison between the modified ziplight insert and the original incandescent ziplight insert...

And the same case with a regular insert for when I need fire...

Does anyone else here own a ziplight? Just curious...
i used to many years ago
i used it until the batteries died, and i had trouble getting replacement batteries
i also realised that a mini maglite was brighter and carried easier

cutlerylover- I think it is a joke, saying flashlight company, as I am sure many people have not had a flashlight on them and had to use a Berkeley lighter to "light" there way. I may be wrong through.

cheers!

I like that ziplight. And no, I don't have one. Might have to look for one now.

Hmmmmm good point, that could be true, maybe Im reading it too seriosuly, lol?

Yeah the batteries that it uses and came with were only made by Zippo and the stopped makign the batteries when they stopped producing the ziplight...thats the reason I upgraded to the LED version...
The siplight is a cool novelty item, it does not produce that much light but Im sure if it got into the hands of many members here that can change very easily, lol...
They can be found on ebay every now and then for like $15 shipped...
