Best battery set up for 3d Mag ROP

Most Mag ROP mods that I have seen call for a 2d mag and 6aa batteries. I have a 3d mag, 4d and a 6d mag, and plan to mod one of them with the ROP high bulb. I already have some Sanyo Eneloop cells that I would like to use with one of the lights to avoid having to spend much more on this mod.

Can someone suggest which Mag would be best to use, and what battery set up I can go with using the AA's? I don't think I can afford to have my 3d mag bored out to fit all 12 AA's in the light, so I am looking for a different set up.

Thanks in advance for your time.

cheapest and easiest i can think of is use the 6D mag and get 6x1 AA to 1D converters you will find then on DX and KDs sites i think you can also get ones that take 2AAs each for longer runtime

I'll echo this as it looks to be the cheapest and easiest way to do it. However, using 6 adapters is probably going to add a lot of resistance to the light which will affect its performance (I just don't know how much).

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping there was a setup I could use with one of the smaller lights. What is the ideal voltage for the ROP high bulb?

If I use the 6d, I think I will just spend the extra money and get some LSD "D" cells. If I am going to carry a light that big, I would like it to have some good run time.

Thanks again!

I am going with the 3854 high bulb. I am thinking about getting some LSD "D" size cells for the 6d mag. Since the high bulb will be over driven, what kind of life am I looking at for the bulb?

You might want to try 6 1/2 D cells in the 3D mag:

Theoretically they should fit, and will deliver the right voltage for the 3854H bulb (although it will be overdriven slightly). If you use the 3853H bulb, then you will be driving it at its intended voltage.

No, 6x1/2D will not fit in 3D M*g.

Will fit in 4D but spring tension will be low.

5x1/2D is perfect fit in 3D M*g and good match with WA1160

My mistake, I didn't realize that 1/2D cells really aren't 1/2 of a D cell in length...
Why are they called 1/2 D cells if they are 36 mm and not 30mm? It seems fairly inaccurate to describe them as 1/2 D cells if they are too big to use in a D cell application.

Agreed, 5 x 1/2D is a great fit in a 3D Mag. The MagCharger battery is a 5 x 1/2D stick. If you're interested check ebay for some cheap options (you'll need a charger, I use a hobby charger and magnets with great results).

Can't comment on the 1160, but I'm sure it's fantastic. I've been using a stock MagCharger bulb and LOVE it so far. Oh yeah this will also require a bi-pin adapter.

Been busy lately and have not had time to check the forum. Thanks for all the great tips! It looks like I have some decisions to make. lovecpf

Excellent idea! May look into one myself

stumbled across it a couple days ago. I was looking for an upgrade for a 3d for my dad without having to bore. mag85 just would not be useful for him so a simple battery holder and socket mod was not an option. Had to do something, so I showed him a 3d I had with a rop lo bulb on a MC battery stick and a MOP reflector and it was just what he was looking for.

I'll be using the upgraded battery for his light, the NIMH stick also offered at batteryjuction for 24 bucks.

Thank you so much for this info :twothumbs

I'll have to try an ROP low in my current setup, I didn't think that was even an option for some reason. I've been using the MagCharger bulb in a bi-pin adapter (as mentioned) with nice results (stock MagCharger output essentially lol).

How is the brightness with the ROP low on the MagCharger stick??

And another big thank you for the batteryjunction info, I know where to go when I need a backup now :candle:
