Of course what I would really like is a la crosse bc900 charger which can also test batteries, but I'm too broke for that at the moment and I would really love something cheap to test the charges on both my alkaline and nimh batteries. At the very least it should be able to read AA and AAA but anything else would be nice too. I saw this but I'm a bit leery of it, what other options are out there?

Those types of testers tend to simply use voltage to move the gauge.

A DMM that has a built-in battery tester that applies a small load would be a better option.

Sorry, I don't know much about batteries, what is a DMM? Also any recommendations for actual products?

you need to get a tester that puts a load on the battery you are testing because some batteries spring back in voltage after you let them sit for awhile so voltage doesn't tell the full story. I currently use a small digital battery tester I paid about $6 for that tests up to 20 volts and has 3 load settings.

That sounds great. What's the brand or where could I get it?

I got mine local.... the model is BT21, I think they have it listed as E19 on ebay though. The one I have is yellow/black but there are other colors as the switch and slide caliper/connector is what is colored. I paid about $6 not knowing where you are I think ebay has one for about $11 but you may find it cheaper if you look around. http://www.e-sun.cn/china-manufacturer/Battery_Tester.html scroll down to see it.

here is the place (locally) I got mine from they do not have online ordering yet http://steveswholesaletools.com/
