I have 3 greenie pointers. One excellent safe one from AtlasNova, one cheap ebay one rated at around 50mw that no doubt has poor or no IR filtering and another cheap 50mw coming from dealextreme that I'll bet has terrible filtering too.

While I'm concerned for the safety of my eyes- I cannot afford to pay $250 bucks for safety goggles. My research into inexpensive ones such as the ones wickedlasers offer gives me the impression that they shield against the 532nm green light but not against the IR coming through. Anybody have recommendations on a $50-150 solution that actually works?

My retinas thank you in advance for any assistance you all can give me.

you can get cheap 532 protection. cheap IR and 532 is another story.

your best bet ( and probably only ) is leftover blps goggles from the us military. you MUST make sure you get a pair with the class4 lenses to have protection.
Dark Brown: OD => 4 at 532 nm (frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser wavelength), OD = 4 at 694.3 nm (ruby laser wavelength), OD = 4 at 1064 nm (NdYAG laser wavelength), markedly attenuates all colors, especially blue, may be marked with "S3" on the lens and is sometimes referred to as the "3WL" or "Class 4" lens, military NSN # 8465-01-416-3210

see this thread for details:

unfortunatly the group buy failed on the part of some CPF'rs undercutting us and a lack of supply or true laser protective goggles, most "BLPS" were only the clear or gray.. and crummy pair of sunglasses at best. almost noone had either the green or brown lenses for the blps they were offering.

the main reason i was interested in the blps was for spectators of my "big scary laser" I have a couple pairs of $400+ glases for those of us who have to work on it. It's a ND:YAG with a 532nm rated output of 5+watts. I also have the ability to split the beam before for an output of 12 watts 1064 and I can also output ~1-2 watts of 355.

I have yet to test the 1064 or 355 harmonics. infact I have yet to really use the 532 at full power.

So I've won an eBay auction on a BLPS set that supposedly includes the needed Class 4 attachment. Thanks again for the suggestion, I'll submit a review as soon as the goggles arrive.

How much protection do welders mask or glasses provide against lasers? At least they would be cheap :D

they should be ok, just be aware those are the OLD ( and I mean OLD ) style glasses.

well they kinda work but they are not safe. some don;t block the right wavelengths, and the VLT is NIL so you can't see anything. your eyes dilate and when you peek out you are at a HUGELY higher risk of accidentally zapping yourself very badly.
