A good light for your purposes is the LEDBeam 3C. You can see in my sig line I have one. It is for sale here:
http://www.ledbeam.com/
It is now $21.95 with free shipping. It has a 3W LED and runs on 3 C cells. It does not have an adjustable beam. It has a small hotspot, but a very bright sidespill. It runs about 4 hours to 50% output. Others here on CPF have reported that it runs well on NiMH batteries.

Wow! That's less than $18 apiece if you buy 3. That's a great price for those lights, though I got the idea that our original poster wasn't looking for a spot.

Is this LEDBeam better than the Maglite? I've been reading very positive reviews on amazon about maglite but then again, it's also the most well known among people not INTO flashlights.... Would this LEDBeam work better than these cheapy 6V lanterns?

Yes it will. I'm guessing that the guy who had these made is in the process of liquidating his inventory. This light is very close to the dimensions of the Mag (even some of the threads are the same, but I don't think it actually infringes on any of Mag's IP. Yes, this light will indeed be brighter than the cheap lantern and it puts out a nice bright white spot. The quality is not as good as a Mag, and I don't know if you could get any warranty work on it (not really worth it if you consider the cost of shipping it back to Hawaii), but I can't say as I've been disappointed with the ones that I have. Size-wize it's a little bit longer than a Mag 3C, otherwise it is almost the exact same dimensions. It weighs a little less than a Mag, the performance is almost exactly the same as a Mag 3C with an LED module in it (which would cost about $35.) If you get 3, you can get them for less than $18 apiece and you've got two Christmas presents taken care of for this year :)

I've been doing some more reading,, how would an Inova x5 compare to that LEDBeam as far as what I'm looking for? I read that the x5 will go out up to 120 feet, that seems pretty good, yes, no?

The X5 will have much less throw than that light. The X5 is nice, but it is a little lacking in that department. It's plenty for navigating in the dark, but you may want more for your circumstances.

The X5 and LEDBeam are diametric opposites. The X5 is a small light with good output (for a small light), a broad flood beam, and relatively little throw. The LEDBeam is a larger (Maglite-size) device with a narrow beam and excellent throw.

Nothing wrong with the LEDBeam especially for the price, except beam is very throw-oriented (which means narrow hot spot). Also it's non-regulated so output drops fast.

Some general recommendations and characteristics:

2AA Mini-Mag LED (about $22): LED. Fairly narrow beam but focusable and good spill. Much brighter than original incandescent Mini-Mag, with longer run time: http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/maglite_minimagled.htm

Streamlight Propoly Lux 4aa (about $28): LED. Fairly narrow beam but excellent overall light. A top-recommended light on this forum: http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/streamlight_propolyluxeon.htm

Nuwai TM-301X-5 (about $55): LED. Broad flood beam, powerful light. Tail switch was very stiff on mine, and faceting on body was somewhat uncomfortable to hold: http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/nuwai_tm301x5.htm

HDS Ultimate 60 (about $150): LED: 20 output levels, general purpose beam. Very compact. Runs on either primary or rechargeable battery: http://www.batterystation.com/hds-edcflashlights.htm
http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/hds_edcu60xr.htm

Streamlight Strion (about $100): Incandescent. Minimag size, but vastly brighter, also rechargeable. Standard equipment for many police departments. Beam is focusable from narrow to broad: http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/streamlight_strion.htm

Surefire G2 (about $35): Incandescent. Shorter than a Minimag, vastly more powerful, good general purpose beam design.

I would also recommend the Streamlight Propolymer Luxeon 4 AA. For the following reasons:

Its cheap.
Uses commonly found double A's.
Produces an amazing amount of light from a very small, lightweight package.
Throws with the best LED lights out there
Its cheap

On the other hand I would NOT recommend the Surefire G2. If you buy this light you will continue to buy lights until you are broke.
You've been warned.

Well here's what I did.. I went out to target and bought a 2 D cell Maglite:
http://www.maglite.com/product.asp?psc=2DCELL

and I bought a replacement 6volt battery for this old 1980 red dark chaser lantern I have.

I haven't tested either out in the park yet, but both sure look like they make a lot of light!

They did have the inova x5 there at target and I tested it, it looked like a lot of light but I wasn't sure how bright it really was there in the store...they also had another Inova LED, but it's not even shown on their website, it was bigger and longer and had only one bulb so I wasn't sure about it.. It claimed a 200 ft distance......

I did see for the maglite that I could buy an LED bulb for it. I actually had the option of buying an LED maglite but it was $36 and the one I got was $16... Is the LED maglite better than what I bought? Should I keep the maglite and buy the upgrade LED bulb?

Hi, :grin2:
I have a dog and my tip is MR Bulks Chameleon or Lionheart (each around 150 bucks). I use these lights for dog walking every day!

If this was a black polycarbonate light that had an octagonal body then it was the Inova Radiant. I have the 2AAA verson and it's a great light with 1 very fatal flaw. The switch in the tailcap is far too easy to accidently turn on so unless you want to rig up some type of cap it's a no go for most appliacations. Aside from that I'd own one ofthese in each size but having a dead light because it turned on in the bag, pack etc., is not an option.

Hello and welcome,

When I walk my dog at night I usually have a Fenix 1LT and a Surefire G2 with me. I also put a small Pelican 2130 clip on red flasher on my dogs collar. This works really well for keeping track of her in the night. Hope this helped.

Now, with the Mag Lite and the battery to put your old light back in service, you have two flashlights.

You are definitely on your way to becoming a flashaholic. The forum has corrupted another!

:twothumbs

Congratulations on the new light!

Haha, don't say that.. I almost became a shave-a-holic with the wet shaving forum.. no time for becoming an anything-a-holic haha..

Ok, so you say the LED for the Mag is better.. Do you have any suggestions for the best bulb I can upgrade to with the one I bought? Because when I was at Target, there was a Mag brand LED upgrade for $20 and then another brand for only $10.. I'm guessing I can probably get a better one online someplace?

The other option is to use illuminated dog collars. Also, keylights or small strobes can be attached with different colors for each dog.
