well the light is really for me.. I dont' think the dog has a problem in the dark.. I can throw a ball in the dark and she'll bring it back without a problem :)

I was just seeing what upgrade bulb I should buy for the light I bought.. I do like the lighted collar idea though!

Well shucks, I had a good response typed up and I deleted it!

Check out the review below on the Mag LEDs:
http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/maglite_mag-led.htm

The $20 price tag for the drop-in Mag LED module sounds pretty normal. I saw them in Wal-Mart the other night for around $18 and change. By the time you order from somewhere online and pay shipping, the cost is probably a wash.

As far as being a shave-a-holic, I am NOT going there!

If this was a black polycarbonate light that had an octagonal body then it was the Inova Radiant. I have the 2AAA verson and it's a great light with 1 very fatal flaw. The switch in the tailcap is far too easy to accidently turn on so unless you want to rig up some type of cap it's a no go for most appliacations. Aside from that I'd own one ofthese in each size but having a dead light because it turned on in the bag, pack etc., is not an option.
If you're worried about that sort of thing, you might want to check out this thread...

My brother had the same issue when walking his dog, in a village in Derbyshire, England, early in the morning and late at night. It's a black lab and vanishes into the gloom.

I tried to make flashlight suggestions, but in the end he went with a lighted dog collar. I know Nite Ize makes one - Nite Dawg:

He doesn't need to light up what's around the dog, just know that it hasn't run off. He makes do with a lousy AA incand. flashlight, mainly so he doesn't step in anything his dog has left behind.

dax702, reading through this thread, I was initially going to recommend you take a look at the many 5mm LED cluster lights available ... although nothing like that 128 LED monstrosity you posted a link to (gimmicky - too fragile).

The more modest cluster lights provide a nice, usable fog pattern for close-range work and are easy on batteries. However, they are lousy on "throw" ... projecting light at distances 100' or more. Some are even mostly washed-out at 50' - 75'. Prices range from $5 -$30+.

However, LEDs, even modest ones, usually show up animal eyes and they will look like two small keychain lights looking back at you .. even over great distances. So range with a light might not be too much of an issue.

Anyway, if you want to run out and buy a terrific light right now, go to Home Depot and buy a 3AA MagLED. One 3-watt LED with a very nice beam which you can focus from fog to (mostly) spot and it comes with a holster in case you need your hands free suddenly. As noted above, they have a 2AA version ... but the 3AA is brighter, has a longer run-time and is not much more cumbersome. Prices range from $19.97 to close to $30 stateside. :)

Well here's what I did.. I went out to target and bought a 2 D cell Maglite:

Should I keep the maglite and buy the upgrade LED bulb?

Congratulations, you made a good choice. The Maglite 2D was most folks first good flashlight. By all means keeps that light and use it. Use it stock for the first couple of battery changes, to get a feel for how the light performs.

Next step, when convenient, buy the Maglite brand LED conversion ($20) and you will be amazed at the difference.

Finally, at some point buy the NiteIze ($10) LED conversion, to store in the tailcap, if you need a light that will run dimmly for 48+ hours.

With these collars you can not only see where your dog is but what it's doing too. The SAR people have found that too and night training efficiencies have improved because you can see when your dog has stopped "working" and needs to be reminded to focus.

Thanks to JohnN and his dog light links .
