Best regulated LED drop-in for GI anglehead light?

I tried a Terralux MiniStar1 TLE-1 in mine, but it didn't focus well, hotspot was a ring with a dark hole in the middle.

Terralux MicroStar1 had the same problem, and was also dimmer.

I ended up using the Craftsman Variable Power LED module available at SEARS for about $15. It focuses into a pretty good spot. It works with 1 to 5 cells, (1.5-8.0 volts) so it contains some sort of circuitry, but whether or not it is regulated I cannot say.

Only other alternative I know of is the EVERLED, but for $30 you have to ask yourself if its really worth it. I doubt you'll have too much performance difference between the SEARS and EVERLED (which is several years old now) anyway.

And I'm using the four die version not available at lighthound. I'm still kindof upset that they dont disclose that their pr drop ins are single die versions and don't last as long or are as bright as the 4-die.

For a lot more brightness (and money) and shorter runtime I can recommend dropping in a 2 cell M@g LED module. You can't screw on the back plastic retainer so you're likely to lose it; but the module fits snugly in there and actually offers some heat sinking. Runtime go from a week to maybe a day.

I use an Everled 1.2W Drop in Replacement Bulb in my GI anglelux. Be sure to use the side-emitter version also known as the "Classic" bulb. The beam is a nice medium spot with reasonable but not excessive side spill (it is a tactical light after all). I am very happy with it, it has a "throw" of around 30M compared Maglight TLE5 1w High dome and a long run time of up to may be 20 hours at reasonable output. The output totally blows away the standard incandescent bulb. The unit is in fact slightly underdriven and I am told also has a thermal resistor in the circut so heat build up is not likely to be a problem in this plastic unit when using for extended runtimes.

Do NOT use the High Dome version contrary to what some suppliers say this does not work well in this torch. The beam is out of focus and there is no way of altering the focus in this light.

Hope this helps

Welcome to CPF! What a great first post! You speak as if you've been here a while.:twothumbs

It is possible to adjust the focus of high domes (and otherwise out of focus PR base bulbs) with the use of shims to push the bulb deeper into the reflector. It gets tricky when you need to bring the bulb into a shallower position.
