Re: Big Honkin\' Throw VS. Output Chart

Wowzers! Let me bounce a few comments back:

RE: Runtimes: for that I would need a light meter or DMM with light sensor that records it's readings over time, or a digicam that has a timer to take interval (time lapse) photos. Since I don't have any of these, if anyone who does would like to forward runtimes, or more precisely, time to 50% starting output, I'd be glad to add them to the chart. I'd prefer not to drag through tons of data, just the light name and time to 50% would be great.

RE: E1e: I don't have one right now (indicated by the little circle/slash next to it's name in the reviews listing...) I reviewed a borrowed unit. I am waiting for one to come in any day now and it will be added to the chart.

RE: Testing: You send em', I'll test em'! All I ask is that you include a few bucks for return postage and send them in a secure enough box that I can use it to send the light back to you. Sorry if this makes me sound like a cheap b&$t#rd, but the site already costs me enough to maintain... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif E-mail me if you are planning on sending lights so we have a paper trail.

McGiz: There are TONS of variables that could affect output besides just the binning of the Luxeons, such as battery manufacturer, individual flashlight characteristics, etc... but I'll test anything you throw at me!

Ticey: You've got me stumped... All I can do is give the readings of the lights I have, and those are my particular results... Your lights may have different bulbs, batteries, etc that can all affect output... So far, Lux has been a pretty good predictor of throw, so this is a good general guide.

Everyone: Glad you're finding this useful! I have LUX readings for ALL of the lights I have reviewed, but I haven't run them all through the beambox. You're looking at about half of them. Consider also that I no longer have a number of them, so I can only run about another 45 or so through the beambox (mostly headlamps and keychain lights). It'll be a while before that all gets done since I have 4 headlamps in the process of review right now (Black Diamond - keep an eye out for the reviews!), several lights on the way (supposedly - if frikkin' UPS doesn't screw up the shippments...) and the're all going to have to take priority.

So enjoy the data so far and it'll be updated sometime soon, but not right away. Except for possibly changing the order in the chart, like by manufacturer, so it's easier to read... Right now it's sorted by overall output.

Re: Big Honkin\' Throw VS. Output Chart

QB, very, very nice work. Really. It is finally a data source that summarizes hundreds if not thousands of posts of subjective comparisons. A true benchmark concept.

It would be a great place to put the Welch Allyn bulb results for comparison against their stock bretheren in a host. Also a good place to declare the current Lux King!

RE: Donations:

Thank you to those of you who suggested sending donations (suggestions received via PM). However, I would feel funny accepting cash for the work I'm doing and besides, I have all the costs under control right now.

If anyone REALLY feels the desire to help, make arrangements with an online retailer to send me a flashlight that I don't have on the site for review, or send a spare NIB light that you have laying around unused or you pick up at a store. Just please send an e-mail first so I can check to see if I have it on the site or in the queue for review. It will be a "donation" that will definately benefit everyone in the form of a review on the site and addition to the chart above.

BUT I don't want ANYONE to feel obligated to do so! This information is completely FREE to EVERYONE with no strings attached!

All this information, my site, and all the time and effort I put into my projects is MY donation to CandlePowerForums and all it's members!

Enjoy!

Re: Big Honkin\' Throw VS. Output Chart

QB,

Didnt mean to make it sound like your readings were inaccurate.

I think what you have done is great, and yes, Lux is a pretty good indicator of throw.
Its just that in real life I have seen a few lights with high Lux readings not throw as far as they should compaired to other lights.

90 to 95% of the time, your chart should be very close to the throw compairison.

Quicky... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif A very comprehensive job here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif. I remember your other chart (blue bar only) and I used that to select my Arc LS. You are only testing production lights I presume?

QB.

Your concept is so simple and yet it has never been done before, at least in my experience. It really is brilliant and I agree that it should be made sticky.

Good job! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

This is true and pertains to certain lights in the list. Perhaps a note could be appended to the chart to show the exceptions, and after I do some testing I'll be happy to post them.
