Where can I buy a 3C or 4C Maglite locally? I don't recall seeing any at stores I regularly stop by to check out flashlights. I'd like to build a few P4 flashlights with alkaline or NiMH batteries and a simple multimode driver like DX 7612.

:thanks:

They're tough to find in a brick & mortar. Even here in the San Jose area, a couple Fry's Electronics locations are the only places I know I can get them. Other Fry's locations tend to be hit or miss. I occasionally see them at Ace Hardware or OSH, but that's about it.

2C's seem to be readily available around here, but 3's and 4's can be tricky.

Which fry's have you seen them at? I have yet to see a C based mag in person.

Another vote for Fry's here... that's the place I've seen them as well. I know I've also seen a lot of different M@gs around in various outdoor and hunting stores, don't remember offhand if C cell sizes though.

Fremont (on Auto Mall Pkwy).

I haven't been there in a year, but when I used to work nearby, I was in that store at least once every few weeks, and they always had plenty of 2, 3 and 4C's.

They have them at the Palo Alto one too, and I'm pretty sure the Sunnyvale one.

I know for sure they have them at the Palo Alto one since I was just there last week. Not sure about the Sunnyvale one though.

I saw some 3C with 2AA Maglite LEDs at Costco this weekend.

I dunno how widespread Ace Hardware is, but it seems that you can ship to store them online... dunno if that fits your definition of Brick and Mortar though...

Yup, I've seen 3C Maglites at Ace. But never seen a 4C at any B&M store.

My local Ace had a 2C, 3C and 4C the last time I was in. But, that's the first time I'd seen any C size there, so I don't know if they regularly stock them.

From here till next year is going to be hit or miss at best...those are go to gifts for so many people and they sell out and get replenished at rates that would astound the non-retailers.

Speaking of Fry's, I saw some lights that were maybe sized for 3Cs, but I was just looking at light output. There were 3 claimed at 200+ lumens and the 2 top lights were amazing. I was looking for separate bulb and collector, but I almost thought about using those things in spite of the extra bulk. They are also packaged to allow sampling the light and I easily lit up the whole corner of Fry's 30+ meters in to an unlit corner of the ceiling, and clearly overpowering even the merchandise lights. I have to say on balance that Fry's are not lit as bright as some retailers...but these lights were awesome.

I need that kind of power on a bike handlebar, so I didn't take any of them home with me, not yet anyway.

Well first off welcome, if you were at Fry's it sounds like you trying out some of the P-series LED Lensers, which do indeed have great output at the start, and a pretty extraordinary (for more established light makers) focusing system, but are otherwise considered overpriced, and for the most part inferior to offerings from other vendors.

It's possible, but unlikely, that you found Inovas, but the higher end Inovas do not allow you to try them...
