In view of the new Fenix P2D and P3D announced, and their use of certain circuits to provide volts & amps to the emitter from a variety of battery types, perhaps we could start a discussion on the latest types of circuit that will take battery volts & amps and convert them into emitter suitable v's & a's.

Simply explained pls. Relative merits etc. Examples in torches ?

Thinking obviously with particular reference to the new Cree / SSC and similar emitters.

With references to previous posts, if suitable.

I point people at National Semi's Analog University. Try "POWER 100 - DC to DC Converter Basics", then "POWER 200 - Switching Regulator Fundamentals". It'll take a few hours, but it's thorough. Then steal from the Reference Library.

Not a National employee - they're just what I learned first. If you prefer another company, Google for e.g, "switching power tutorial site:maxim-ic.com" for gems like this, the other thing I point folks at.
